The Director of Content will lead the Washington Spirit's creative vision and content strategy, combining innovative thinking with a strong business mindset to deliver engaging and impactful marketing materials across multiple platforms. This role aligns creative with organizational goals, ensuring that content not only captivates, but also drives measurable business outcomes.

The Director, Content will:

  • Leadership and Management: Role is responsible for managing both the in-house video production and photography team, and with an external sports design agency for graphic creation.
  • Creative Direction: Oversee the creation and production of high-quality creative assets and shoots, including photography, video, digital content, and print materials, from concept to execution. that showcases the team's values, players, and story in an authentic and engaging way.
  • Content Creation: Drive innovative content initiatives around key team moments (e.g., matchdays, partnerships, player features) that engage both current and new fans, ensuring creative materials support both short-term campaigns and long-term brand growth on traditional and digital media channels.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with other departments such as partnerships, ticketing, community relations and fan experience to align creative efforts with business goals and fan engagement strategies.
  • Data-Driven Insights: Use data and performance metrics to optimize creative content and campaigns, ensuring maximum impact, engagement, and ROI.
  • Project Management: Oversee the timely execution of multiple creative projects, ensuring that deadlines, budgets, and quality standards are met.
  • Graphic Design: Manage graphic design projects in collaboration with an agency partner, ensuring effective coordination, timely creation, and on-schedule delivery of high-quality assets to meet organizational needs.
  • Trend Awareness: Stay on top of industry trends and emerging technologies, integrating innovative ideas and creative solutions to keep content fresh and ahead of the curve.
  • Brand Consistency: Ensure that all content aligns with the Washington Spirit's brand guidelines and resonates with diverse fan audiences.
  • Partner Collaboration: Manage relationships with external partners, agencies, and freelancers to support creative efforts as needed.
  • Process Optimization: Implement streamlined processes to increase production efficiency and scale creative output across the team and organization.


The ideal candidate has:
  • 7-10 years of experience in a creative leadership role, ideally in sports marketing or entertainment, with a strong portfolio demonstrating your ability to lead successful campaigns and create engaging content that drive tangible business outcomes
  • At least 5 years of experience managing creative teams, including designers, photographers, and videographers.
  • Proven experience in content creation, visual storytelling, and creative direction across digital, social, and traditional media.
  • Creation and maintenance of a comprehensive, updated content calendar.
  • Strong understanding of social media, digital marketing strategies, and audience engagement across multiple platforms.
  • Experience with project management tools and ability to lead and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and manage relationships with external partners.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and provide constructive feedback to team members.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, especially during critical campaign moments and game days.
  • Strong understanding of accessibility guidelines and ensuring content is inclusive for all fans.
  • Flexibility to work non-traditional hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required for events and campaigns.
  • This in-person role is based in Northern Virginia and requires attendance at our Leesburg, VA training facility and Falls Church, VA corporate offices as needed, usually three to four days per week. Gameday attendance at Audi Field in Washington, DC, is mandatory. Travel with the team is not a requirement.
