POSITION TITLE: Bus Driver CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt DEPARTMENT: Transportation SUPERVISOR: Transit Operations Supervisor GRADE: NE5 Position Summary: Bus Driver will report directly to the Transit Operations Supervisor; bus driver operates the assigned school buses for the purposes of providing transportation between Pueblo villages, transporting students to and from schools, recreational activities or field trips. Provides regular scheduled pickups and drop offs; responds to special needs requests on an as needed basis. Assist passengers in boarding or exiting as needed. This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only of the tasks performed by this position and is not all-inclusive. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Operates bus on a set schedule and ensures passengers are on time. Follows procedures to ensure passenger safety. Obeys traffic laws and local, state, and federal transit regulations. Maintains and follows established bus routes (specified pick up and drop off locations). Performs the Pre-Trip and Post Trip inspection before and after each trip. Inspects the bus for damage, tire inflation and pressure, fuel, and other fluids levels, and cleanliness prior to and after each shift. Keeps windows and mirrors (inside and out) clean. Maintain accurate vehicle maintenance records, inspection records, and passenger logs. Ensures that floor surfaces are kept free of any obstructions. Inspects seating surfaces. Ensures that the vehicle is locked, never unattended and running, and secured at the end of the shift. Collects any items left in the bus and takes items to the lost and found located in the supervisors office. Participates in recreational activities and field trips as support staff. Performs other work-related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or GED; employee must have and maintain a New Mexico Commercial Drivers License (CDL) class B with P and "S" endorsement and be insurable under the Pueblos insurance; must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation. Must be able to obtain and maintain a CPR/First Aid certification. Must be able to pass and maintain a DOT Physical (required to retain CDL) Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Certifications: Knowledge of New Mexico State Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting students. Knowledge of operational characteristics of school transportation vehicle. Knowledge of policies and procedures governing the reporting of vehicle accidents and incidents. Knowledge of principles and practices of first aid and CPR. Knowledge of methods and techniques of basic vehicle preventative maintenance. Knowledge of methods and techniques of enforcing safety regulations on a school transportation vehicle. Knowledge of principles and procedures of record keeping. Knowledge of safe driving practices as they relate to school transportation. Ability to meet schedules and deadlines. Ability to work independently with minimal direction. Ability to maintain confidentiality of privileged information in the course of work. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Physical Demands: Sitting, standing, lifting, and carrying (up to 50 pounds), climbing stairs, reaching, squatting, kneeling, having full mobility of fingers/hands, talking and hearing, unless ADA accommodations have been mutually agreed on and does not create an undue hardship upon the Pueblo. The employee frequently is required to walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee occasionally is required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Safety and Health: Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions (blood borne pathogens, body fluids, etc.) Equipment/Material Handled Variety of different make and model vehicles. Standard office equipment including calculators, copier, and fax machine. Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually normal. Employee must be able to operate vehicle in a safe manner during periods of inclement weather.
