This position is part of the structural welding crew that fabricates, installs and repairs steel bridges components, and other crew replaces deficient bridges which cannot be let to contract in a short time frame and are beyond the Districts ability to install. While in official capacity, DOTD employess must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals and directives.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience or training in the welding trade; OR

Completion of a Technical Diploma or Associate of Applied Science welding program from a Louisiana Technical or Community College or equivalent program from other institutions.

Job Concepts

Function of Work:
To weld, braze, cut, grind and otherwise fit various metals to specific uses using gas and electric welding techniques and related metal working tools.

Level of Work:
Experienced.

Supervision Received:
General from a Welder Foreman or maintenance supervisor of higher level.

Supervision Exercised:
None

Location of Work:
All agencies; statewide.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from the apprentice and other lower level maintenance jobs by its performance of journeyman level welding work and from Welder Foreman jobs by its lack of required supervisory duties.
Examples of Work

75% Incumbent is responsible for the performance of skilled work at the journeyman level. Work includes but is not limited to, the use of acetylene torches and electric arc welding equipment on specialized projects in the shop and field. Assignments include but are not limited to cutting, brazing, welding, laying out the fabricating various metal compontents in the shop and field. Incumbent will examine rough plans to ensure proper dimensions and repair, replace or fabricate compontents as necessary.

15% Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and performs maintenance necessary to keep equipment clean and in good working order. Operates heavy trucks ane other equipment when moving from job to job while at the job site. Incumbent exercises functional supervision over trade Apprentices on various jobs as needed. Also works unsupervised on small to medium jobs as needed.

5% Requistions welding supplies, equipment and materials.

5% May be required to perform duties as necessary including, but not limited to emergency disaster support activities.
