Description and Qualifications
The Surgical Organ Recovery Specialist (SORS) III is responsible for the surgical dissection, removal, preparation, and recommendation for transplantation of deceased donor livers, kidneys, pancreata, and small intestines.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Recovery and Distribution of Organs and Tissues
SORS has the primary responsibility for supervision in the donor operative room consistent with CAC/VPCO approvals.
Assumes the lead and participates in the procurement livers, kidneys, pancreata, and small intestines from brain-dead (BD) and donation after circulatory death (DCD) donors in compliance with local and national standards for organ transplantation.
Provides advice and counsel to LCNW staff when addressing potential adverse events/reactions/outcome reports, surgical errors, potential disease transmissions, or complaints that are medical in nature, have potential medical consequences, or that may affect the safety of recovered organs
Mediates disputes between recovery and/or transplant surgeons and programs, including real-time consultations.
Assists and advises in the allocation of organs with transplant programs.
Is responsible for providing direction on organ perfusion and preservation of organs for transplant.
Is accountable for timely, complete, and accurate documentation for all appropriate surgical donation related materials, i.e., donor chart.
Development
Collaborates internally and externally with others to develop and promote practices that increase the number or organs recovered for transplantation and for research.
Ensures a respectful and collaborative professional working relationship with all colleagues, ensuring a team approach for the success of LCNW.
Serves as a role model and resource to internal staff and to external contacts and colleagues.
Participates in the Clinical Advisory Meetings and associated subcommittee meetings as available.
In conjunction with LCNW staff, review data regarding organ utilization with designated transplant centers; recommend changes in practice when necessary to increase utilization and ensure protocols are consistent with the current standards of practice.
Pursues professional development activities that provide continued growth, expertise, and maintenance of professional skills.
Quality Assurance and Compliance
Reviews any reports of surgical damage; provides follow up to transplant surgeons in the cases of reported occurrences.
Assists in the development, review and approval of new and existing surgical policies and preservation procedures in the recovery, evaluation, and placement of donated organs.
Adheres to quality standards and legal compliance with regulatory and accreditation agencies (e.g., CMS, UNOS, AOPO, FDA, OSHA, CDC).
Training and Education
Develops and provides instruction for organ recovery transplant Fellows and surgeons interested in the organ donation procurement process, including the training and education.
Develops and provides instruction to the Surgical Recovery Coordinators on assisting in organ recovery surgery and assessment of advanced surgical skills.
Supervision
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. This position provides significant direction to clinical staff.
Other Responsibilities
Complies with applicable laws, regulations, and LifeCenter policies and procedures.
Follows other instructions/directions and will perform other related duties as required by the needs of LifeCenter and leadership team.
Participates in compliance, quality assurance, and performance improvement programs and initiatives.

Physical Activities/Requirements
Up to 30% regional travel as needed.
Hospital immunization, health screening, and background check requirements. Immunizations and tests will be provided by LifeCenter as required.
This position requires on call responsibilities and travel is essential to this position; the employee must be prepared to travel by automobile and aircraft within and outside the LCNW’s DSA.
This position requires the ability to effectively operate phones, computers, and other office equipment.
The individual must have the ability to communicate clearly using the English language to accurately convey information and be able to hear at normal speaking levels both in person and over the phone.
Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work is normally performed in an office or hospital setting as well as other business environments. Generally, working conditions have exposure to bio-hazardous materials (including potential donors with hepatitis C, hepatitis B, HIV, or other serological markers).
The employee is required to move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
ANTICIPATED WEEKLY TIME COMMITMENT
This position is full-time and works 36 weeks per year. Due to the nature of the position, the incumbent will need to work outside of regular business hours, including evenings and weekends, sometimes without advance notice.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & JOB REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in medicine, biology, or related life science from a four-year college or university
5 years’ experience in tissue banking or organ procurement coordination.
Advanced documented training or experience in a formal surgical training program required. General surgery program or abdominal transplant fellowship training or equivalent strongly recommended.
Requires a valid driver’s license and access to an insured automobile for work-related functions at expected times.
Proof of COVID-19 vaccination, or applicable medical or religious exemption will be required as a condition of employment upon offer.
