The City of Elk River is seeking candidates for a custodian position. The person in this position will pay great attention to detail and is responsible for preserving the physical integrity of City buildings by applying skilled custodial services. Position Summary:The Custodian is responsible for preserving the physical integrity of city buildings by applying skilled custodial services.
Essential Functions
- Performs routine cleaning activities in and around city facilities.
- Cleans buildings as scheduled.
- Maintains all floors to include vacuuming, carpet cleaning, sweeping, mopping, buffing, and waxing.
- Cleans windows (inside and outside), walls, and baseboards.
- Washes sinks, mirrors, hardware in restrooms and other areas, and sanitizes restroom facilities.
- Empties garbage and recycling containers.
- Sets up and takes down chairs, tables, etc. for meetings.
- Performs minor interior and exterior maintenance and repair services.
- Paints areas that have been worn, damaged, or repaired.
- Maintains all lighting including fluorescent, emergency, exit, and outside lights and timers.
- Makes minor repairs as directed by supervisor.
- Reports any damage or deficiencies to supervisor.
- Performs light duty grounds maintenance.
- Clears snow in immediate entrance areas of city facilities.
- Picks up litter from grounds.
- Performs other essential job duties.
- Regular and timely work attendance.
- Follows all safety procedures including wearing Personal Protective Equipment.
- Participates in safety training.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the practices, procedures, equipment, chemicals, and materials used in building maintenance.
- Skilled in the safe operation of tools. Requires the ability to wear and use all safety equipment, as necessary.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize duties.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow written and oral instructions, including safety rules.
- Ability to comprehend, calculate, problem solve, and consult relevant sources and manuals.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, climb, crawl, stand, bend, reach, and manipulate objects and equipment requiring manual dexterity as needed to perform duties.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including 3M mask when working with chemicals.
- Ability to perform work while standing on a ladder up to 10 feet high.
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid driver's license and good driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the custodial field.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
