Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Camp Director, the Action Quest Camp Counselor is responsible for the safety, supervision, and enjoyment of the Glencoe Park District campers. Counselors work at an assigned camp for campers in Grades 5 through 9. This position is assigned to a group of campers, ensuring proper supervision and engagement in camp activities.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old or older.
  • Previous camp experiences are preferred.
  • Must possess CPR/AED/First Aid certification or be willing to obtain it within one month of hire.
  • All employees must pass a criminal background check, which the Glencoe Park District will pay for.
Required Knowledge:

Knowledge of the philosophy of public recreation, the ability to communicate this to others, and proven technical knowledge of the position's content are required.

Required Skills:

Must be dependable and flexible, with good safety awareness and sound judgment. Workers must be able to understand and follow rules and instructions. Must have the ability to read, write, and organize material.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • The Action Quest Camp Counselor is responsible for planning, organizing, leading, and supervising group activities.
  • Camp Counselor will prepare activity plans for participants.
  • Understand, accept, and follow the philosophy, operational goals, and objectives of the camp and the Glencoe Park District.
  • Assist co-workers in any way possible to develop a spirit of cooperation.
  • Communicate with your supervisor concerning problems, questions, or suggestions.
  • Encourage social and emotional growth in each camper.
  • Be responsible for the health, safety, and personal well-being of campers.
  • Assist campers with skill development and encourage participation in activities and social interaction.
  • Report to work promptly at the time assigned.
  • Always conduct yourself as a representative of the Glencoe Park District and promote Park District functions.
  • Maintain written records and prepare forms as required.
  • Attend all special events, overnights, trips, and meetings as assigned.
  • Provide coverage for before and after care as needed.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of and follow all general and departmental-specific safety rules.
  • Immediately report all accidents and unsafe conditions to the Camp Director or Program Manager, and complete and submit accident forms immediately.
  • Cooperate and assist in the investigation of accidents.
  • Attend all required safety programs and in-service education meetings.
  • Treat public complaints and concerns with the utmost attention. Be courteous in all cases.
  • Pay strict attention to the neatness of camp area(s) and general facility.
  • Dress appropriately for the position: gym shoes, camp shirt, shorts or pants, District-provided whistle, and swimsuits should be one-piece; no sandals or flip-flops.
  • Keep campsite, supplies, and equipment neat and in good condition.
  • Clean the work area and campgrounds before leaving each day.
  • Bring any concerns to your supervisor before they become an issue.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Camp Director, Program Manager, and Director of Recreation and Facilities.
Hours:

Due to the nature of park district programming, evening, weekend, and some holiday hours are to be expected; however, traditional camp hours will take place between 8 AM and 4 PM.

Pay Scale:

The intended starting pay for this position is $16 per hour, with a full pay scale ranging from $16 per hour to $18 per hour

Final compensation will be determined in good faith based on an evaluation of the candidate's qualifications, experience, and the recommendation of the Assistant Director of Recreation and Facilities, or the Deputy Director/Director of Recreation and Facilities.
