Department: Facilities - Operations

Budget Title: Janitor (SG-7)

Local Title: Janitor - 6:30am – 3:00pm Monday-Friday

Classification: SG-7; $37,121

Duties:

1. Perform a variety of cleaning and unskilled maintenance tasks and supervise lower-level cleaning staff responsible for the cleaning and upkeep of assigned areas in State buildings, and surrounding grounds and walkways.
2. Collect and remove trash, recycling, compost, and hazardous or misplaced items from floors, furniture, and equipment; and dispose or place them in appropriate receptacles and locations.
3. Prepare, mix, and dilute cleaning solutions following manufacturer directions.
4. Wash floors, corridors, stairwells, walls, partitions, and windows using mops, detergents, brushes, and other cleaning devices.
5. Vacuum, strip and wax floors, shampoo carpets and clean and maintain other flooring using manual or mechanical equipment.
6. Supervise a group of lower-level cleaning staff.
7. Assign tasks; provide instructions and assistance; demonstrate proper cleaning procedures; review work in progress and upon completion; monitor time and attendance; and evaluate performance.

Qualifications:

1. A valid NYS Driver’s license.
2. Must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and communicate orally and in writing to exchange information.
3. Candidates must meet the posting qualifications required, meet the legitimate operating needs of the department or agency and have the ability to perform duties and responsibilities satisfactorily.
4. Ability to supervise up to ten cleaners.
5. Ability to perform basic unskilled maintenance.
