Summary of Job

Reedsburg Municipal Pool lifeguards are responsible for providing a safe environment at the Webb Pool facility. Lifeguards will provide a positive image of the city aquatic program by attentive, conscientious and courteous behavior on the job. Lifeguards will report to the Aquatics Manager and the Head Guards. This position is a seasonal position from June through August.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Warn facility patrons against unsafe practices.
  • Watch swimmers through safe scanning practice and perform rescue/assist as necessary.
  • Enforce pool and facility rules and regulations.
  • Maintain order in the pool area, bathhouse, and deck area.
  • Perform assigned cleaning responsibilities.
  • Guards may be asked to test water, inspect equipment, clean the area and treat water as directed.
  • Guard will complete accident report forms, rescue forms, and incident forms.
  • Perform first aid, CPR, and artificial respiration as needed.
  • Guards may be asked to obtain WSI to teach swim lessons.

Qualifications

  • Guards on duty in the pool area will not leave their station until relieved by another guard. Appropriate station changes will be performed.
  • Guards will remain in the pool facility while on duty (includes break time).
  • Guards will not sit or stand together while on duty. Each will be assigned an area of responsibility.
  • Guards will be trained and will enforce safe use of the drop slide.
  • Guards may be assigned to be "on call" on poor weather days and may be sent home on low attendance days.
  • Guards will not swim on duty unless permission is given by the manager or a head guard.
  • The required uniform for lifeguards will consist of a staff swimsuit and whistle. It is strongly recommended that guards wear a hat or visor and ultraviolet eye protection. Hats and visors will be approved by manager for use by lifeguards. Sweatshirts will also be issued to guards.
  • Long hair must be tied back while on duty. Jewelry will be limited to waterproof watches. Post earrings will be allowed. Tattoos must be covered.
  • Guards have the authority to correct any violations of the rules, but should be as courteous as possible in doing so. If a rule is violated after a first warning has been given, guards may ask the person to sit out of the water 10-15 minutes. If a second warning is given and violated, guards may send the person home. The manager should be notified if someone is sent home. An incident report should be completed as soon as possible.
  • Guards shall be responsible for recording their time correctly on a time card. Time cards will be turned into the head guard responsible for them on designated days.
  • When on duty, guards are expected to be dressed only in the authorized uniform and authorized accessories.
  • Guards will participate in periodic skills review and emergency drills.
  • Guards must be at the pool in uniform and ready to work at the designated start of their work shift.
