The Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking highly qualified applicants to fill a Laborer II (Grade G8) position in the OHM Seasonal 1000 hours.
About the Position:
Hours will vary depending on the needs of the department and weather conditions. Employees will be expected to work over-time, if needed. Duties require initiative and independent judgment in the care and operation of equipment, as well as mechanical aptitude and skillful coordination of eye, hand, and foot movements. These positions are entry level performing routine manual work in the performance of unskilled and limited skilled tasks of a physically demanding nature. Work is related to asphalt, masonry, concrete, mowing, flood, litter control, tree, turf and grounds maintenance on County rights-of-way and at County facilities.
Day-To-Day Operations
- Performs the full range of manual labor work duties and responsibilities.
- Cleans streets, curbs, gutters, right-of-ways, sidewalks and catch basin inlets.
- Assists in tree, turf and grounds maintenance on County rights-of-way and at County facilities.
- Assists in the construction, repair and/or patching of streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways, storm and sanitary sewers, catch basins and barriers and fences.
- Cleans up and removes trash, leaves and other debris from County property.
- Acts as traffic flag person.
- Moves and arranges furniture as directed.
- Cleans and maintains tools and equipment.
- Loads and unloads vehicles.
- Performs unskilled, limited skilled and skilled tasks related to asphalt, masonry, concrete, mowing, flood and litter control.
- Uses simple hand tools, power tools, and motorized equipment in the conduct of various unskilled manual tasks.
- Uses ropes, tools and other equipment in a manner consistent with safety protocols; maintaining the safety of crew members and the general public.
- Drives crew cab truck to transport personnel and materials to and from job sites.
- Perform pre/post trip inspections to ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
- Operates power mowers, both push type and self-propelled, roto-tillers, weed eaters, chainsaws and other maintenance equipment, including hand rake, hand shovel, wheelbarrow, bush axe, etc., as directed by the supervisor.
- When not completing normal day-to-day crew assignments, remains consistently productive by performing litter pick-up, signage removal, etc.
- Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the class of work.
- Outfitted daily with appropriate safety gear such as safety vest, protective eye wear, hard hat, steel-toed boots, gloves and consistently observes safety rules and procedures.
Required Emergency Operations
- Participates as an essential employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities.
- In preparation for weather emergencies/during weather emergencies, assists Tool Room staff with the removal and attachment of plow blades and pins.
- Promptly responds to assigned tasks when notified of reporting requirement for inclement weather/emergency conditions operations.
- Operates 4x4 truck with blade and spreader during snow removal operations.
- Operates equipment with spreader and/or snow plow and effectively removes snow and ice from assigned area.
- Safely operates vehicles/equipment according to weather and road conditions.
- Accurately reads maps to confirm that assigned area is plowed in proper order and no roads are missed.
- Removes snow from County sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and other areas, then applies sand and/or salt to icy areas as directed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of six (6) school grades.
- General manual labor experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience is also accepted.

Conditions of Employment:
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Submit a current Motor Vehicle Administration report that reflects a satisfactory driving record.
- Pass a physical examination and drug screen.
- Pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening.
- Wear required safety equipment, shoes, and uniforms while on duty.
- Be willing to participate as an essential employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and during other emergency/special activities as assigned.
- Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
- Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.
- Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies.
- Incumbent is considered to be an ESSENTIAL employee and must conform/perform according to essential employee policy and procedure including required to work during emergency situations, including inclement weather, natural and man-made disasters, etc.
