Position Description

The job of Bus Driver is to transport students over scheduled routes and/or special trips in accordance with local, state, and federal laws, and district policy and procedures; enforcing rules, regulations, and laws to maintain safety during transport; ensuring the vehicle is in safe operating condition and ensuring safety of students during transport, loading, and unloading of buses.

Minimum Education and Qualifications
  • Be at least 18 years of age and hold a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Criminal history clearance/fingerprints
  • Possess a valid Washington State Commercial Driver's License, Class B, with school bus and passenger endorsement
  • Possess an acceptable driving record as defined in WAC 392-144-103 (2)(3), a driving record free of all major violations such as DWI or negligent driving, with a limited number of minor violations
  • Possess a valid first aid certification
Minimum Requirements :
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Must be a trustworthy individual with a high level of integrity and work ethic throughout all duties.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters.
  • Must be punctual and dependable. Regular and consistent attendance is required.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
Essential Functions
  • Engage with visitors, parents, students, and staff in a welcoming manner.
  • Drive the school bus for the purpose of transporting passengers over scheduled routes to and from school, extracurricular events and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner.
  • Assist students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading practices from buses including both emergency situations and normal transport.
  • Advise students and other passengers of appropriate behavior for the purpose of reinforcing regulations and maintaining passenger safety.
  • Conduct emergency evacuation drills for the purpose of ensuring efficiency of procedures and complying with mandated requirements.
  • Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
  • Continuously scan all engine/equipment gauges for the purpose of ensuring safe operation of the vehicle.
  • Clean assigned vehicles daily, both interior and exterior (e.g. bodily fluids, spills, dust, sweep, mop, windows/headlights/mirrors/windshield cleaned, scrub graffiti, scrape gum, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicles.
  • Fuel assigned vehicle (e.g. oil, water, fuel, etc.).
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g. fuel levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safe operating condition of the vehicle and complying with mandated guidelines.
  • Prepare documents and reports (e.g. special trip reports, incident reports, inspection records, student roster, mileage logs, students counts, routing information, timesheet, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
  • Report observations and/or incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel.
  • Supervise students and other passengers during transit for the purpose of maintaining safety and following district policy.
  • Accurately assess situations and remain calm during emergencies or stressful situations.
  • Keep up-to-date on all local, state, and federal laws and regulations relative to the job's essential functions.
  • Operate according to professional and ethical standards at all times. This includes maintaining a high degree of confidentiality, courtesy, cooperation, positive attitude, reliability, punctuality, accuracy, and efficiency.
  • Arrive to work on time and maintains regular and consistent attendance, consistently adhering to work schedule.
  • Participate in team meetings for the purpose of collaborating and sharing information. This includes teams focused on student attendance, multidisciplinary teams, behavior support teams, etc.
  • Attend relevant training for the purpose of attaining and maintaining current knowledge of specific job and/or district, state and federal rules, regulations, policies and procedures and laws.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by administrator(s).

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: Working under limited supervision, performing tasks in a timely manner, completing required paperwork, and following assigned work schedule. Continually looking for opportunities to have a positive impact on district programs and services.

Salary

2024-2025 Rate: $27.41 - $30.04 per hour (at least 4 hours per day; 180 work days; 10 paid holidays)

Final benefit eligibility to be determined at time of hire. Employees are eligible to enroll in the Department of Retirement Services (DRS) SERS plan (classified employees) or TERS plan (certificated employees), as well as the DRS Deferred Compensation Program. Employees will receive sick leave, personal leave, and paid holidays, as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement and District Policy.
