The Facilities & Operations (F&O) Directorate's mission is to enable great science. The Guest Services Division provides services that support and assist the world-class scientific research performed at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Guest services are available to all Brookhaven Divisions, Departments, guests, users, and visiting researchers.

Position Description

Brookhaven National Laboratory's Facilities & Operations (F&O) Directorate seeks a Housing Custodian. This position reports to the Residence Services Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Under general supervision, performs general cleaning and housekeeping duties in the Housing facilities.
  2. The hours of operation/shift for this position are 8:00am - 4:30pm

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Requires one year of custodial/housekeeping experience or equivalent professional cleaning experience.
  2. Must be flexible and customer oriented.
  3. Must be able to read and comprehend OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets and other job-related documents.
  4. Must have a valid NYS driver's license.
  5. Requires a High School Diploma, GED, or higher.
  6. Experience with customary hand and machine equipment.

Other Requirements

  1. Must meet the medical requirements of the "Job Assessment Form".
  2. Must have a telephone and must provide the number to BNL for callout and contact purposes.
  3. Must possess written and verbal skills.
  4. Must be able to communicate verbally with customers, fellow workers, and supervisors.
  5. Must be able to complete all the requirements of the Job Training Assessment, and the ability to pass computer-based training.
  6. Must be capable of following written instruction procedures, work orders and similar documents.
  7. Must possess the writing skills to sufficiently complete work orders and other required documents.
  8. The successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date.

Environmental, Health and Safety Requirements

  1. Standing, bending, and lifting
  2. Moderate lifting < 30 lbs.
  3. Ability to climb portable ladders
  4. Work in warm environments
  5. Physical coordination dexterity and balance
  6. Use of powered operated hand tools
  7. Ability to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection

The Lab's placement policy is to select the best qualified candidate for an available position. The salary per hour for this role is $24.46
