MADERA COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

CLASS TITLE: CUSTODIAN

BASIC FUNCTION: Under general supervision, to perform a variety of tasks involving general cleaning and routine repairs and maintenance of buildings and grounds. The primary responsibility of this classification is to provide students and/or staff with a clean, safe, attractive, and efficient place in which to learn and work.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  1. Maintain high standards of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.
  2. Dust and clean classrooms and offices; wash walls, woodwork, and other surfaces; and wash windows and door glass.
  3. Sweep, mop, scrub, strip, and wax floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets.
  4. Wash and sanitize sinks, toilets, urinals, drinking fountains, and fixtures.
  5. Replenish paper supplies, soap dispensers, and storage areas.
  6. Empty trash receptacles and dispose of trash.
  7. Routinely inspect buildings and grounds to ensure proper maintenance and safety.
  8. Pick up supplies and equipment as needed.
  9. Perform minor building and custodial equipment maintenance.
  10. Advise Manager, Maintenance and Grounds, of necessary repairs.
  11. Move, arrange, and set up classroom and office equipment, supplies, and furniture.
  12. May maintain exterior grounds, including the mowing and edging of lawns.
  13. May use hand tools to work soil and remove weeds, undergrowth, and debris from landscaped areas.
  14. May oversee the work of student assistants.
  15. Maintain security and safety of buildings.
  16. May assist building administrators in working with special groups who use the building during off hours.
  17. Respond as necessary to the intrusion and/or fire alarm systems or due to emergency situations.
  18. Attend staff and inservice training meetings.

OTHER DUTIES: Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF: Methods, supplies, tools, and equipment used in custodial work; safety regulations and safe work practices; proper hygiene practices and procedures; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; oral and written communication skills; methods of collecting and organizing data and information; interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

ABILITY TO: Use supplies, tools, and equipment required in custodial work safely and effectively; make minor repairs to facilities and equipment; operate hand and power tools; climb ladders; return to a worksite outside of normal assigned working hours in response to alarms or emergencies; train student assistants, if requested; work a flexible schedule; handle emergencies; understand and follow directions; communicate effectively; analyze situations accurately; prepare records and reports; react with flexibility; interact effectively with students, parents, staff, and the public; maintain confidentiality; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT: Indoor and outdoor environment; may work in extreme weather conditions and be exposed to noise and fumes from equipment operation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Perform strenuous physical work; dexterity of hands and fingers; hearing and speaking to exchange information; sitting or standing for extended periods; seeing to read a variety of materials; reaching overhead; bending, kneeling, or crouching.

SELECTION PROCEDURE: Applications will be reviewed by a screening committee. Interview dates will be individually arranged for selected applicants.
