A successful Managing Director of Schools A successful Managing Director of Schools will work under the direction of the Chief Schools Officer (CSO) to provide strategic management and coaching of school principals to ensure leadership strategies support improved student outcomes in alignment with APS priorities. The person in this role will lead efforts to ensure alignment across four schools and support Principals in the execution of strategies for staff retention, instructional leadership, community engagement, and student success. The ideal candidate for this role brings deep expertise in and experience with effective school leadership, with a proven track record of improving student outcomes and inclusive of experience coaching and developing teachers to achieve their highest potential. The ideal candidate will also bring a deep understanding of the California Common Core Standards, the California state accountability system for charter schools, aligned best practices, and research-based strategies for effective school leadership and instruction, and will be able to leverage this understanding to effectively build the instructional expertise of school leaders through ongoing and impactful coaching and professional development. Additionally, the candidate will have experience managing teams to achieve high-impact results, exceptional collaboration and communication skills, and the ability to build trust and gain buy-in across all levels of the organization. What you’ll do… Manage and Coach Schools Principals Provide strategic leadership and targeted coaching to four school principals, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, instructional leadership, community engagement, and student success. Implement performance systems and strategies for observing principals in action through walkthroughs, video observations, and data analysis to deliver targeted coaching and ensure high standards of instructional leadership. Partner with the Chief Schools Officer, Principal Director of Talent Development, and Managing Director of Academics to design and implement professional development programs that enhance school leaders’ skills in data-driven instruction, observation and feedback practices, and APS systems. Collaborate in designing and implementing a comprehensive onboarding process to ensure new principals are well-prepared to assume their roles and aligned with APS priorities. Lead Accountability of School-Level Academic Strategies Partner with the Managing Director of Academics and Academic Directors to align expectations for instructional materials, assessments, and strategies across schools, grade levels, and content areas. Ensure school principals and sites are implementing Academic strategies for instruction set by the Managing Director of Academics. Collaborate with the Managing Director of Academics to monitor the implementation of academic strategies, address challenges, and develop school-specific interventions to close gaps. Work alongside Managing Director of Academics and school leaders to analyze school-wide academic achievement data, identify root causes, set school-wide academic goals and outcomes, and develop aligned action plans. Partner with the Director of Culture on implementing strategies that support a safe and inclusive learning environment at all four schools. Stakeholder Engagement Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with community stakeholders, including authorizers and elected officials connected with each school. Provide regular updates on instructional programming implementation, data, and strategies to externally facing partners, such as authorizers and the APS Board. Partner with the Associate Director of Community Schools on community engagement strategies that support APS schools. Lead School Leaders to Successful Outcomes Design and implement systems and routines to set and monitor progress against ambitious, measurable goals for leader, teacher, and student performance, as well as operational effectiveness. Collaborate with APS colleagues on budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation programs to ensure all resources are maximized for student learning. You possess… Bachelor’s Degree required, Graduate Degree preferred. At least 5 years of experience as a successful leader with at least 3 years of experience as a school principal. Strong leadership skills with the ability to execute and refine a cohesive vision and strategy for instructional leadership at APS. Deep understanding of the California Common Core Standards, CAASPP assessments, best practices, and research-based teaching strategies. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders, including school leadership, network staff, community members, and board members and authorizers. Ability to quickly build trust and establish productive working relationships with multiple stakeholders, including school leaders, teachers, community members, and family members. Ability to effectively prioritize tasks and responsibilities and support direct reports to do the same. Experience applying change management, including successful implementation or adoption of systems-level changes. CA Teaching Credential Preferred; Administrative Credential Preferred.
