GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The High School Dean at Maryknoll School, a Catholic educational institution, plays a vital role in advancing the school's mission by supporting its spiritual, academic, and extracurricular programs. This dynamic leader fosters a Christ-centered learning environment, promotes academic excellence, and ensures holistic student development. The High School Dean collaborates with faculty, staff, administration, parents, and the school community to maintain a positive, disciplined, and inclusive culture aligned with Catholic values. The High School Dean oversees HS department chairs, Grade 9-12 counselor, the college counselors, the student life coordinator, and the office coordinator/health aide. The High School Dean ensures an innovative Catholic education program by leading in spiritual, academic, and curriculum development, financial and personnel management, student/teacher/program evaluations, public relations, planning, and facility maintenance. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Spiritual Leadership • Uphold the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church. • Be prayerful, faith-filled, and committed to spiritual growth. • Create an environment for faith and moral development. • Apply Church documents and religious resources in education. • Foster the spiritual growth of the school community. • Lead the school community in prayer. • Link the school with other Hawaii Catholic schools. • Integrate gospel values and Christian principles into the curriculum. • Articulate and direct the Catholic educational vision. • Recognize and accommodate cultural and religious differences. • Promote and uphold the Catholic identity of the school in all aspects of its operation. • Encourage faith formation for students, faculty, and staff through prayer, liturgical celebrations, and retreats. • Collaborate with the Pastor, Campus Ministry, and Theology departments to integrate Catholic teachings and traditions into school life. Academic and Curricular Leadership • Develop, implement, and evaluate the curriculum to ensure high academic standards. • Plan instructional programs aligned with the school's philosophy and mission. • Encourage instruction that meets diverse student needs and abilities. • Develop and monitor school improvement programs. • Assess student programs and their impact on learning. • Keep students/families informed about school policies, procedures, and activities. • Collaborate with staff to encourage broad student participation in school programs, including student government, art, music, and athletics. • Approve and oversee high school events and activities. • Oversee planning, organizing, and supervision of events such as dances, retreats, pep rallies, and community service initiatives coordinated by the student activity coordinator. • Support the Student Activities Coordinator with the Student Senate and other leadership groups, providing mentorship and guidance. • Support the Student Activities Coordinator with organizing leadership training programs, workshops, and retreats for students. • Develop a comprehensive calendar of extracurricular activities to enhance school spirit and student involvement. • Encourage student participation in planning and decision-making processes. • Provide oversight for clubs and organizations. • Ensure all events and activities adhere to school policies and safety guidelines. Teacher-Focused Responsibilities • Collaborate with department chairs and principal in hiring, mentoring, and evaluating faculty and staff. • Support teachers in instructional strategies, classroom management, and professional growth. • Provide guidance to meet diverse student needs and improve instructional quality. • Promote high expectations and identify areas for staff performance improvement. • Evaluate the instructional program through strategic goals and continuous supervision. • Facilitate professional growth through meetings, in-service days, and conferences. • Oversee academic scheduling, including course offerings, teacher assignments, and student placements. • Work with department chairs, registrar and principal in creating, offering and conducting a robust summer school program to both High School Maryknoll students and students from other high schools (private and public) for either course recovery or advancement. • Monitor and analyze student performance data to inform instruction and interventions. • Lead accreditation and strategic planning efforts with faculty. Department Chairs and Curriculum Responsibilities • Provide academic leadership and curriculum oversight to ensure rigor, alignment with standards, and integration of Catholic values. • Mentor and evaluate teachers to improve instructional practices. • Support professional development and training opportunities for teachers. • Oversee student assessments, monitor performance data, and ensure academic excellence. • Collaborate on course scheduling and teacher assignments. • Manage the department's budget and resources effectively. • Address academic concerns and ensure a supportive environment for students, families, and faculty. Academic Advising, School and College Counseling • Work with school counselor, college counselors and registrar (when applicable) on academic issues. • With the school counselor and principal, provide crisis intervention when appropriate. • With the school counselor and principal, seek to acquaint individuals with appropriate agencies for resolution of problems. • With the school counselor, college counselor and principal, create and maintain student academic restrictions list. • Support and contribute to the creating and maintenance of the course catalog for academic advising and enrollment/reenrollment. • Support and attend college preparatory workshops organized by the College Counseling Department. • Oversee the operation of advance program partnership with external colleges conducted by the college counselors. Administrative Duties and Roles • Oversee daily school operations, including safety, facilities, and events. • Monitor staff absences and manage substitute coverage. • Develop and manage the school budget and resources for the division. • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and regulations. • Communicate effectively with parents and the school community. • Coordinate building use and maintenance with the director of physical plant. • Collaborate with the CFO and principal on budget monitoring and reporting. • Uphold the philosophy of Catholic education. • Promote staff morale and a sense of Christian community. • Shape and implement a school philosophy reflecting Catholic values. • Lead curriculum development, integrating Christian values. • Collaborate with other deans to align and advance the school. • Initiate and conduct staff development activities. • Model life-long learning and updating knowledge. • Demonstrate diverse educational skills. • Conduct evaluations of students, staff, and programs. • Provide effective instructional leadership and supervision. • Demonstrate good decision-making processes. • Work collaboratively with all stakeholders. • Plan and supervise financial resources with the principal and CFO. • Make financial decisions aligned with Church teachings. • Use technology effectively. • Know current school law as it applies to Catholic schools. • Develop emergency procedures with the director of physical plant. • Lead public and community relations activities. • Maintain an orderly school environment promoting self-discipline. • Represent and support board norms and policies. Student Development and Discipline: • Implement a positive and restorative discipline program reflecting Catholic teachings. • Address student behavior issues fairly and compassionately. • Support student activities, athletics, and extracurricular programs. • Foster an environment promoting student leadership, responsibility, and service. • Encourage intellectual, spiritual, moral, emotional, and physical growth. • Prepare students to be responsible, compassionate, and active members of society. • Integrate Catholic teachings into all aspects of student life. • Guide students to develop a conscience grounded in Gospel values. • Cultivate virtues like respect, responsibility, integrity, and compassion. • Use a faith-centered approach in discipline and development. • Encourage viewing discipline as a path to growth. • Recognize and reward good behavior and achievements. • Emphasize restorative practices to build empathy. • Apply rules and consequences uniformly. • Ensure disciplinary actions align with Catholic principles. • Engage parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators in the developmental process. • Maintain open communication with all stakeholders. • Focus on preventative strategies like character education and peer mediation. • Provide resources to address issues like bullying and substance abuse. • Encourage student leadership in service and faith activities. • Teach discipline as a means to serve others and contribute positively to the community. Dean as Communicator • Lead school and community relations. • Interpret board policy to staff, parish, and community. • Inform parish and community about high school programs and activities. • Translate the school's philosophy to Maryknoll constituents. • Maintain open communication lines between students, parents, faculty, and staff. • Participate in EOS Academic Team meetings and provide updates on high school matters. • Attend EOS Leadership Team and board meetings for academic presentations as needed. • Articulate Catholic Christian and educational values. • Apply group dynamics, conflict management, problem-solving, and organizational skills. • Delegate responsibilities appropriately. • Relate the school's service dimension to the civic community. • Ensure publication and adherence to handbook policies. • Provide consistent updates for parents. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • Minimum of 3-5 years of leadership experience preferable in Catholic school setting. • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field. • Experience in curriculum development and teacher coaching. • Working knowledge of Catholic teaching related to specific departments and/or divisions, and the ability and desire to develop and maintain a learning environment with Catholic faith teachings. • State or diocesan certification in school administration (or willingness to obtain). • Proven leadership skills and the ability to inspire collaboration among diverse shareholders. • Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. • Commitment to maintaining a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for all students. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS • Familiarity with restorative justice practices and other student-centered discipline models. • Knowledge of accreditation processes and standard for Catholic schools. • Practicing Catholic in full initiation with the Church preferred. • Master’s degree in educational leadership, administration or a related field preferred. Salary Range for the position:
