Pay for Switchgear Technician:

Hourly: $25.00 an hour


Location for Switchgear Technician:

Philadelphia, PA

No relocation allowance.

Experience for Switchgear Technician:

  • Must be willing to submit to a pre-employment background check and drug screening.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be an American citizen or authorized to work in United States.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Having electro-mechanical training from trade school, apprenticeship or armed services is highly desirable.
  • Must be able to correctly use tools and testing equipment including but not limited to insulation resistance test set, low resistance test set, digital multimeter, dielectric test set, primary & secondary injection set, timing and velocity test set, and power factor test set.
  • Must have 2+ years of low and medium voltage switchgear and circuit breaker experience; or 2+ years of mechanical experience in an industrial, production or large component environment.
  • Ability to read and understand one-line diagrams, blueprints, schematics and construction drawings.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
  • Must possess a strong mechanical & electrical aptitude.
  • Must possess good written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to work well with others and maintain a professional environment.


Physical demands for Switchgear Technician:

  • Must be able to lift 50lbs overhead.
  • Must be able to push, pull, lift, climb, and extend as required for the job.
  • Able to stand, bend & kneel for extended periods of time.


Job Summary for Switchgear Technician:

Performs all types of complex switchgear, circuit breakers, and control work including the repair and test of existing equipment, and assembly and test of new equipment. Diagnose the cause of trouble with inoperative equipment and make necessary repairs both inside and outside the home office facility.


  • Performing a variety of complex operations to test the electrical and mechanical characteristics of circuit breakers and switchgear, and all related parts and assemblies.
  • Setting up and using test instruments including primary and secondary injection test equipment, contact resistance test equipment, insulation test equipment, torque testers, relay test equipment.
  • Verifying and adjusting for proper electrical-mechanical clearances, wipes, pressures, etc.
  • Conducting special tests under direction of project management and engineering personnel
  • Reading and interpreting complex electrical drawings, schematic diagrams, specification sheets, performance charts, test standards and other procedures
  • Checking function of controls, relays, indicators, and other electrical features and adjusting as necessary
  • Troubleshooting circuit breakers, switchgear, and other related components to the sub-assembly and/or root-cause level
  • Reading and properly interpreting time-current curves
  • Interface with services quality team to ensure compliance to procedures and specifications.
  • Interface with project management and engineering to resolve any related technical issues.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to travel and gain unescorted access to nuclear generating stations
  • Qualified to operate a forklift
  • Qualified to operate an overhead crane
  • Experienced with GE type low and medium voltage circuit breakers and switch gear
  • Experienced with GE type EC trip devices
  • Experienced working in a regulated environment
  • Nuclear Safety Culture Experience
  • Prior NFPA70E training
  • Lock-out Tag-out qualified
