In partnership with the President and VP of Operations, the Provost serves as the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) and co-leads the creation, design, and execution of the academic vision and model for Butler Academy. The Provost establishes the design of both the student experience and the educator professional learning experience, developing tools and training to bring those things to life in the day-to-day operation of the three schools within the Academy (also referred to as the network). The Provost will design, develop and manage key organizational systems, building upon the tools and resources developed over the past five years at the Academy. The Provost reports directly to the President. What follows are the core responsibilities for this position.


Academics Team Leadership:


  • Serve as the Team Lead for the Lower, Middle and Upper School Deans of Academics 
  • Ensure that curriculum selection, course descriptions for high school credits, and equitable grading protocols and practices remain data driven, aligned with the mission and vision of the Academy, and connected to existing priorities, curricular programs, and instructional expectations
  • Lead deans to fully understand and implement Cognitive Coaching, Teach Like a Champion Best Practices, Get Better Faster Scope and Sequence, Personalized Coaching, Completing Coaching Cycles, Facilitating Mid-Year Reviews, Facilitating Improvement Plans and Creating a Coaching Handbook to house these protocols, best practices, handouts, etc. so it all lives in one place 
  • Hold weekly school walkthroughs and 1-on-1 coaching sessions with each dean to ensure that all instructional coaches are calibrated on what effective instruction and a healthy school climate look like
  • Ensure that feedback and messaging throughout the Academy (to teachers and families) remain consistent and calibrated around specific standards
  • Developing a Playbook to demonstrate how coaching looks at various levels of experience, expertise, and content knowledge (e.g., coaching the first year teacher who teaches four core subjects, versus the veteran teacher who is a content expert). 
  • Continually analyze teacher practices through ongoing classroom observations, data analysis, weekly meetings with deans, and examination of student work.
  • Support all academic deans in their ability to establish a school culture that fosters high expectations for all scholars
  • Model coaching for academic deans when necessary
  • Serve as the network testing coordinator
  • Assists with Career Day, College visits and teacher recruitment
  • Coordinate / approve field trips
  • Serve as an ADEPT/Teacher Mentor Coordinator



Teaching and Learning Systems:


  • Collaborate with the President to set the vision and design of BA’s scholar experience, academic model, and instructional approach to driving scholar learning 
  • Build and facilitate the use of data systems, platforms, and tools that provide insight into school, educator, and scholar performance, including all scholar achievement data
  • Lead effective change management and progress monitoring processes to ensure that gaps between academic design and implementation are being closed and captured
  • Select and design programmatic and curricular approaches that our scholars will experience, and establish training and support to increase the quality being delivered
  • Lead the development and/or selection of high-quality curricular materials and high-quality assessments designed to support scholar learning and improvement
  • Develop, design, and monitor the organization’s master schedules, training schedules, and all other aspects of logistics that facilitate teaching and learning


Educator Development Systems:


  • Create and provide high-quality, effective professional learning experiences through multiple modalities and avenues to educators across the Academy
  • Develop and facilitate professional learning sessions for network-wide training days, notably during the summer months when new teachers and leaders get trained/re-trained
  • Serve as a content expert with our chosen core curricula
  • Actively participate in training, professional development and learning activities

  • Network Leadership:


    • Align with the President in bringing the organization’s vision to life; serve as a key advisor to the President and ambassador for the President in shaping future organizational direction
    • Collaborate with the Operations Team on strategic priorities, goal-setting, change management, staff training, and other org-wide processes
    • Collaborate with other members of the Network Team (e.g., Dean of Students, VP of Development) to ensure alignment across the various work-streams of the organization
    • Promote, model, and steward BA values and priorities across the entire network and embed those into curriculum, instruction, and assessment systems
    • Assist the President with ensuring compliance with all academic components of Federal Programming
    • Participate in network activities and school-related community events
    • Serve as School Lead in the absence of the School President
