This is a salaried position assigned to the Elko County School District (ECSD) Teacher Salary Schedule.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The primary role of the professional school nurse is to promote the health and well-being of students, thereby facilitating student success and achievement. This person reports to Principal and School Nurse Coordinator (NRS Chapters 632 and 391; Nevada State Board of Nursing).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Implements a comprehensive student health program. Assesses and evaluates the health and developmental status of students for the purpose of identifying physical disorders and other factors affecting the learning process, communicating with the primary care provider, and contributing significant information in order to modify the student's individualized educational health plan. Conducts health screenings, i.e.: vision, hearing, scoliosis, and height and weight, in accordance with Nevada Revised Statutes. Develops and implements a health plan to care for students with chronic and acute illness, injuries, and developmental disabilities. Maintains, evaluates and interprets health information to identify individual needs of students. Provides and delegates student medication at school in compliance with the Elko County School District Medication Policy. Participates as the health care expert on the Special Education Evaluation Team. Collaborates professionally with administrators, students, staff, parents/guardians, and community representatives. Participates as an integral member of the Crisis Intervention Team and provides for crisis intervention for acute illness, injury, and emotional disturbances following established protocols. Assists in selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of paraprofessionals and other unlicensed district personnel involved in the delivery of student health services, in accordance with district and state requirements. Visits students' homes if necessary to assess health needs of the child. Promotes the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of communicable disease. Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison between home, school, and community. Provides health education to students, parents, and school personnel: Counsels with students concerning problems such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and substance abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision-making practices in accordance with Nevada Revised Statutes. Serves as a resource to the classroom teacher and administrator in health instruction. Serves as a member of health curriculum development committees. Informally teaches parenting skills related to child development and child health needs. Provides health counseling for staff informally and formally through health related in-services and workshops, including Universal Precautions and Prevention of Bloodborne Pathogens Infection. Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices. Participates in continuing education programs related to School Nursing to increase knowledge, update skills, and maintain licensure. Complies with school site procedures and District policies and procedures and assumes other tasks as may be assigned by the Principal and/or School Nurse Coordinator. Utilize a computer in health-related searches, email communication, data collection and health record, medication and specialized procedure documentation. Demonstrate general knowledge in the fundamental principles, trends and research in the field of school nursing. Maintain and improve professional competence. POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Training:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from a National League of Nursing accredited college or university. Licenses and Certifications:
Must possess, or be able to acquire: A registered nurse license from the Nevada State Board of Nursing. School Nurse Certification from the Nevada Department of Education. BLS CPR Instructor. Current Health Care Provider AED/CPR certification from the American Heart Association. A valid driver's license that allows the applicant / employee to legally operate an insured motor vehicle in Nevada.
