Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach
Iowa State University Athletics is seeking applicants for an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach to support assigned NCAA Division I Olympic sports under the direction of the Director of Strength and Conditioning. The initial sport assignments will be Men’s Wrestling and Women’s Gymnastics (sport assignments subject to change as deemed necessary by Administration).
What you’ll do:
- Evaluate, design, and implement cutting-edge strength, agility, and conditioning workouts for assigned sports that will help ISU athletes and team performance excel.
- Teach and demonstrate proper techniques and safety, conduct performance testing, adapt workouts based on each student-athlete’s needs and health, and motivate athletes.
- Analyze data and create regular performance reports on student-athletes to aid coaching staff.
- Regularly and effectively communicate and collaborate with health, performance, and support staff (e.g., Sports Medicine, Sports Nutrition, Mental Health), along with coaches and administrators.
- Build trusting relationships with the head coaches and student-athletes to develop proactive solutions to their requests/needs.
- Assist in management, safety, and sanitation of assigned weight room(s).
- Contribute to and enhance a competitive athletic experience.
- Contribute to the Strength and Conditioning Department’s overall mission, including mentorship of interns, continuing education, and professional development.
- Establish and maintain an environment conducive to the welfare and academic success of the student-athletes.
- Establish and maintain effective interactions with students, colleagues, university staff and administrators, alumni, media, and the public.
- Commitment to and responsibility for adhering to all rules and regulations of the University, Big 12 Conference, and NCAA.
The ideal candidates will have solid technical knowledge in strength and conditioning; strong organization, decision-making, database, and analytical skills; and exceptional teaching, motivational, and communication skills. Candidates are expected to be committed to multiculturalism and working with a diverse student body. This position requires the ability to be flexible to work assigned evenings, weekends, extended hours, and to travel with a team as requested.
Candidates will be required to have and maintain current certification through a nationally accredited strength and conditioning certification program in accordance with NCAA requirements.
Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Experience coaching strength and conditioning to athletes at a highly competitive level (post high school).
- Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the NSCA or Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) through the CSCCa.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certified.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience strength coaching for a NCAA or elite wrestling program.
- Master’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, or a related field.
- USA Weightlifting Level 1 certification or similar.
- Experience monitoring and preparing athlete performance reports using performance technology (e.g., force plates, velocity-based training, Kitman, Vald, Catapult).
