About the Opportunity:

Chelsea Piers is seeking a hard-working and dedicated Chief Engineer to join our Property Management team. You will be responsible for performing a variety of work requiring the knowledge of one or more skilled trades to resolve operational and/or safety concerns. The Chief Engineer will directly manage a team of skilled tradespeople and will be responsible for the maintenance and repairs of all HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment, and systems across the Chelsea Piers properties with the goal of obtaining the most efficient operating results and life expectancy.


You will be responsible for ensuring all equipment is operated and maintained in an energy efficient and safe manner, anticipating necessary repairs, and keeping records of past operating experiences. You will also perform inspections and repairs to assigned property interior and exterior areas, including walls and flooring, installed fixtures, roofing systems, lighting, etc.


As the Chief Engineer, you will be expected to:

  • Maintain exemplary knowledge of all building systems/equipment including: HVAC – packaged RTUs, AHUs, condensers, pumps, boilers, cooling towers, controls, fans, heat exchangers, water treatment, etc.
  • Plumbing – boilers, piping, ejectors pits, etc.
  • Electrical – distribution equipment, generators, ATS system, etc.
  • Fire & Life Safety – fire alarm, sprinklers (wet + dry), standpipes, pumps, deluge
  • Ice Rinks - Compressors, controls, cooling tower, dehumidifiers
  • Aquatics - Pumps, filters, heat exchangers, UV system, chemical feeds, controllers
  • Maintain this knowledge base for the flagship Chelsea location and well as the Brooklyn Fitness clubs and Field House
  • Build, maintain and prioritize a task list for yourself and your team
  • Maintain HVAC/Plumbing-related service contracts and ensure all required work is completed properly and on time
  • Identify areas for potential cost savings related to the maintenance of all mechanical systems
  • Be the first call when any area of Chelsea Piers is experiencing a mechanical/technical issue
  • Work with outside contractors for all services calls
  • Perform select ongoing preventative maintenance and repair work on facility systems
  • Perform/coordinate major HVAC repairs including compressor replacement, condenser replacement, evaporator coil replacement, etc.
  • Perform/coordinate minor and major plumbing projects and repairs including, but not limited to piping, boilers, and fixtures
  • Perform/coordinate electrical projects including running and bending conduit, pulling cables, performing electrical panel installation and maintenance, electric motor maintenance, etc.
  • Respond quickly to emergency situations, summoning additional assistance as needed
  • Monitor and comply with all applicable government agency codes and regulations (FDNY, DOB, DEP, EPA, OSHA, etc.) as relates to building operations, and safe work habits.
  • Comply with all safety procedures, maintaining good housekeeping and safe work areas
  • Recognize danger and safety hazards and propose methods to eliminate them
  • Meet with service providers on routine and emergency visits
  • Provide positive and negative feedback to direct reports and conduct regular performance reviews as required by company policy.


About You:

  • Strong knowledge of all building systems and equipment including but not limited to plumbing, electrical, fire safety, ice rinks, etc.
  • Ability to perform repairs including, but not limited to piping, boilers, fixtures, electrical installations, maintenance, etc.
  • Familiarity with government codes and regulations as it relates to building operations and safety
  • Experience creating and prioritizing a task list
  • Experience managing a team of tradespeople and conducting performance reviews
  • Ability to anticipate issues and resolve them quickly
  • Q-01/Q-99 Refrigeration System Operator License
  • S-12 & S-13 CoF for Citywide Sprinkler and Standpipe Systems
  • OSHA-30
  • Flexible schedule with ability to work nights and weekend as needed
