This is a paid internship for the summer of 2025. The student selected will be assigned to work in the Department of Public Works Environmental Services Division. This opportunity is for an undergraduate level student who is in a Environmental related program to work within our Department of Public Works.

Essential Duties
Water Quality Research Intern. This is a paid internship for the summer of 2025.
The student selected will be assigned to work in the Department of Public Works Environmental Services Division.
The Environmental Services Division of the Department of Public Works is committed to assisting residents of Henrico County through continuing efforts to implement environmental management programs in accordance with local, state, ad federal laws and regulations that will protect the environment and enhance the quality of life for our residents. We recognize the interdependence of environmental protection and economic growth and will continue to promote environmental conservation, environmental awareness, and the minimization of environmental impacts as we complete our job tasks.
ESD is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Water Quality Research Intern to assist the Water Quality Research Analyst. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in water quality management, environmental research, and fieldwork in a supportive and dynamic environment.
Desired Student:
Recent graduate orcurrently enrolled in a degree program such as Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, or related field Desired GPA:
2.50 Work Hours : 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday are core hours but may require night and or weekend hours to support outside activities and events. Work Location : 10431 Woodman Road, Henrico, VA 23060 Expected Start Date : May 16, 2025 Expected End Date : on or by the start of the fall 2025 semester but has the possibility to be extended to December 31, 2025 depending on the student selected and their performance and availability.. Internship Status : This is a paid internship position at the hourly rate of $16.00/hour, up to 29 hours per week.
The intern may be a part of a variety of duties to shadow, perform or provide:
Assist with water sampling and analysis in various water bodies within Henrico County. Conduct bioassessments and support insect identification to contribute to ecological studies. Participate in wetlands delineation and learn about stormwater management practices and other Best Management Practices (BMPs). Collect and organize data in support of ongoing research projects. Collaborate with the Water Quality Research Analyst on various tasks and projects, contributing to enhancement efforts in water quality. Maintain organized records and documentation of fieldwork and research findings. The Desired Student should have:
Interest in: Water quality, environmental research, and ecological studies Planning, organizing, and engaging in clerical and technical work Basic computer proficiency. Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience of County employees and citizens are integral to the internship. Familiar with programs such as: Word, Excel, Publisher, and GIS. Good organizational skills. Attention to detail and the ability to perform independently and follow directions is essential. Strong foundational knowledge in a field relevant to internship. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to collect and organize facts/tasks effectively. Through the course of the internship the student will gain knowledge of:
Water Quality Research Analysts daily operations Hands on training in wetland delineation techniques Field training in water sampling protocols and bioassessment procedures Stormwater management and Best Management Practices Careers that exist within local government Internships are intended to provide the intern with basic experiential exposure to a field of interest. The intern must bring a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities and finish the internship having gained basic experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Pursuing a undergraduate or associate degree in a field relevant to internship; GPA of 2.50 or better desired.
Experience : in pursuit of degree of college-level program in relevant degree program; relevant job, volunteer or previous internship experience.
Or: Any equivalent combination education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities relevant to the internship.
