The work of a school guidance counselor is to provide direct and indirect services in support of students' academic, career, and social emotional development. School counselors serve as leaders within their schools, advocating on behalf of their students and sharing in the creation of a positive learning environment. School counselors demonstrate professionalism, strong ethics, cultural competencies and diversity awareness. They must effectively communicate as they work to connect students, school staff, families and community partners in collaborative efforts to help students realize their potential and meet their goals.

QUALIFICATIONS :

Valid Ohio School Counselor Certificate/License Counseling experience and training to carry out the functions of the counseling position is preferred Valid Ohio Driver's License

An elementary school counselor must possess the following skills:

Knowledge and understanding of the Ohio Standards for School Counselors Ability and willingness to engage in collaborative planning within the school for a comprehensive school counseling program Leadership skills in identifying resources for the school counseling program Demonstrate ability to effectively provide direct individual and group services to meet the academic, career and social/emotional development needs of students Demonstrate ability to develop appropriate academic and non-academic interventions for students as needed Familiarity with crisis response procedures and be able to respond appropriately in crisis situations Knowledge in areas including human development, societal trends, human diversity, assessment, data, technology and research on effective practices Demonstrate ability to make connections, build partnerships, consult and seek solutions and provide referrals to meet students' academic, career and social emotional/development needs Demonstrate ability to engage in a cycle of continuous improvement using data to identify needs, plan and implement programming, evaluate impact, make recommendations and adjust accordingly Demonstrate ability to monitor student performance and progress Demonstrate ability to lead efforts to implement and advocate for programs, policies and practices that support an equitable, safe, inclusive and positive learning environment for all students and meeting the needs of the whole child Demonstrate professionalism, model ethics and seek continuous professional learning Must have excellent evaluations, outstanding recommendations, strong interpersonal communication skills, training and experience in goal setting, consensus building and collegial decision making Understanding of confidentiality in all school matters Ability to work flexible hours, as needed Willingness to accept other duties as required by building principal or district administration LEGAL REQUIREMENTS:
