Transmission Line Engineer

Richmond, VA (Hybrid: 2-3 days/week)


Position Overview: This role is the mid/senior progression level position in the Engineer series. Includes senior to technical expert engineers, able to perform difficult and complex work requiring thorough knowledge and experience of transmission line engineering. Schedules and coordinates major segments of complex projects to meet cost and time objectives. Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered and develops engineering criteria ensuring compliance with design criteria and standards. At higher levels of proficiency within this classification, incumbents are expected to provide technical expertise and/or team leadership as needed. Provides guidance to less experienced Engineers. May be required to apply intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices to major projects that have significant impact on programs in varied areas and related fields. May serve as a technical expert on engineering related legal and regulatory issues to outside entities.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide detailed design packages for high voltage transmission line projects. This will include, but not limited to, building new lines, re-building and modifying existing facilities, fiber installations, and customer relocations.
  2. Provide analysis and evaluation of high voltage electric transmission line facilities.
  3. Select most cost-effective solution to achieve desired reliability for a given project.
  4. Support projects starting at the detailed design phase and through construction to energization.
  5. Provide oversight and guidance to external engineering vendors to uphold The Company’s standards of engineering and safety excellence.
  6. Interface with other departments or groups such as Project Management, Construction, Supply Chain, Permitting & Route Selection, Real Estate, Right of Way Administration, and Transmission O&M.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Four-year accredited Engineering Degree, Civil Engineering preferred. (Engineer II/III)
  2. Four-year engineering/engineering technology degree, Civil Engineering preferred. (ETS II/III)
  3. At least 3/5 years knowledge and working experience in Transmission Line Engineering and PLS-Cadd
  4. Ability to perform in a high pace, multi-task environment and to independently plan and organize work schedule.
  5. Communication and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with project teams, customers, other utilities, and government agencies.
  6. Knowledge of engineering theories, principles, standards, codes, concepts, and their application to problem solutions.
  7. Strong computer skills and application of pre-packaged software programs.
  8. Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  9. Willingness to make effective business decisions based on analysis and abstract thinking.
  10. Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and prioritize work based on customer need.
