Environmental Professional

A person who is formally educated in wastewater, chemistry or a science-based curriculum. The person is qualified to act as a subject matter expert in Environmental Wastewater Management.


Purpose:

To implement and manage all aspects of environmental compliance for the site. Ensure safe and efficient operation of the environmental department. This position will have direct reports.


Leadership Skill Set:

  • May provide formal supervision to individual employees within single functional or operational areas.
  • May plan and monitor appropriate staffing levels and utilization of labor, including overtime.
  • May provide recommendations regarding staff recruitment, selection, promotion, advancement, corrective action, and termination.
  • May prepare and/or deliver performance appraisal for staff.
  • Provides daily communication to the management team.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Familiarity with EPA, IDEM and local regulations associated with wastewater, air quality, hazardous and solid waste, stormwater, contingency planning and other applicable programs.
  • Ability to interpret and apply state and federal regulations.
  • Confirm all required testing is completed within the department.
  • Update and develop SOP’s within the department.
  • Review and analyze data associated with the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Make changes to the wastewater treatment plant using data collected through testing, visual inspection, and other observations within the facility.
  • File all required environmental reports and permit applications.
  • Liaison with regulatory officials. This may include preparing letters, reports or submissions to regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain all files that are required by regulators.
  • Communicate with consultants, chemical vendors and outside contractors regarding environmental projects.
  • Prepare monthly KPI reports for environmental programs.
  • Maintain chemical inventory for the wastewater plant.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical systems.
  • Aptitude to identify new projects and facility improvements necessary to maintain compliance and opportunities to reduce operational costs. This includes providing guidance for continuous improvement efforts.
  • Submit service request for maintenance of the facilities, monitor maintenance work, and ensure completion was done properly.
  • Prepare and manage annual budgets for the environmental department. This may include the wastewater treatment facility, technical department, and utilities department.
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental management, chemistry, or a science related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years of environmental compliance experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and local health and environmental regulations.
  • Working knowledge of wastewater treatment chemistry.
  • Wastewater Class C Operator license.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to develop and present materials.

  • Operational package boiler experience
  • Management experience
