Role Overview :
Alameda Health System is hiring! The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) position is the senior medical officer and physician executive, and serves as business and clinical strategist for AHS. The CMO leads AHS’s vision of the highest possible standard of patient care and clinical effectiveness, working closely with the clinical chiefs, department chairs, President of the Medical Staff and other medical leaders, and senior hospital and ambulatory service executives. The position is responsible for leadership of AHS’s delivery systems and represents AHS to key external and internal partners, performs as an advocate for the medical staff and directs the medical staff’s roles and responsibilities. Performs related duties as required.
- Develops and maintains quality assurance and peer review system to comply with applicable laws governing the licensing approval; assures provision of quality medical services to all patients
- Oversees professional conduct and practices of all clinical staff. Receives and reviews identified patient care concerns and ensures that both resolution and appropriate, effective corrective action are implemented
- Supervises all budgetary expenditures related to medical issues, including new equipment and addition or deletion of clinical services
- Finalizes medical / clinical budget estimates
- Serves on the executive team and works to develop AHS’s strategic vision to achieve the AHS mission
- Provides clinical leadership to all providers within AHS and is the liaison with the medical staff; oversees medical staff services
- Ensures the makeup, amount and scope of medical services within AHS, including ambulatory care, acute inpatient care, inpatient psychiatric care, emergency care and urgent care
- Oversees the strategic and financial analysis of AHS clinical programs and services
- Leads the development and implementation of electronic data management systems for AHS clinics
- Directs and evaluates organization-wide medical program development and direct medical services
- Designs, facilitates and participates in collaborative efforts involving data collection and analysis of overall medical services; prepares reports as necessary
- Performs as chief liaison with community-based organizations such as Alameda County Health Care Services - Agency, and Alameda Alliance for Health
- Coordinates professional education and training programs for medical and clinical staff
- Develops medical staff and organizational policies, procedures and protocols, including those related to Joint Commission or regulatory compliance
- Receives medical staff input in the development of AHS medical policies and procedures
- Develops, reviews, approves and oversees the compliance of medical protocols and procedures for services provided by AHS and its attendant sites
- Evaluates AHS quality management reports; reviews with Associate Medical Officer
- Reviews and submits reports for the executive committees and Board of Trustees related to the quality and appropriateness of professional services provided in AHS
- Reviews resolutions of the AHS Quality Council Committee
- Coordinates with all applicable health organizations to ensure that the work of AHS meets all relevant standards of medical care, disease prevention and disaster preparedness
- Oversees the work of the medical, nursing and other clinical and administrative staff, including contract physicians, clinics and other settings
- Oversees the hiring process, evaluation, conduct and daily scheduling of professional staff assigned to AHS
- Reviews and participates in results of all medical staff documentation that ensures compliance with Joint Commission standards and all applicable state and federal regulations
- Presents for review updates or amendments to staff documentation for review by the Ambulatory Executive Committee, Medical Executive Committee or other appropriate medical staffing committee
Qualifications :
- Education : Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) required
- Master’s in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Public Health, or related degree strongly preferred
- Minimum Experience : Five years’ clinical background as a practicing clinician or clinical leader, plus substantial experience in an administrative capacity in an accredited hospital or medical center
- Required Licenses / Certifications : 5+ years of clinical background as a practicing clinician or clinical leader with substantial experience in an administrative / leadership capacity in an accredited hospital or medical center
- Experience as a CMO (or equivalent) in a large, complex hospital or health system preferred
- Current and unrestricted medical licensure in any US state required
- Current or past Board Certification required
- Appropriate medical professional organization (ACP; AMA)
