UNC Police Lieutenant is a first line Police Commander. Police Lieutenants report directly to a Division Commander and responsibilities of this position include supervisory and managerial duties in directing a Police function such as a Patrol Squad, Community Response Unit, Criminal Investigations Section or Administrative Services. Duties may also include investigating citizen complaints, preparing Administrative Reviews, and managing the department's compliance with law enforcement standards.
Police Lieutenants work with minimal supervision in daily managerial and administrative functions in a complex 24/7/365 work environment. Any Police Lieutenant may be required to take command of any operational situation on campus and is responsible for demonstrating command presence and managing personnel and other resources to mitigate and resolve the situation. Police Lieutenants direct the actions of any Police line personnel (Officers and Sergeants) as part of the chain of command. All Police Lieutenants are responsible for exercising independent judgment and competencies commensurate with a Police middle management position. Police Lieutenants evaluate appropriateness of officer responses; designate assignments; manage criminal and internal investigations, direct needed resources; and interpret laws, ordinances and department policies and procedures.
Duties may include orientation, review, and training of officers. Lieutenants may also conduct pre-shift briefings, review reports and investigations, coordinate daily activities, supervise accreditation compliance and provide input concerning operational planning.
Minimum Requirements
Senior Police Supervisor I - A minimum of a bachelor's degree or greater and 6 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience or an associate's degree and 8 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. At least 3 years of the experience requirement must have been in a supervisory role equivalent to a Police Sergeant or greater. Certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible for out-of-state lateral hires. Senior Police Supervisor II - A minimum of a bachelor's degree or greater and 6 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience or an associate's degree and 8 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. At least 3 years of the experience requirement must have been in a supervisory role equivalent to a Police Sergeant or greater. Certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible for out-of-state lateral hires. Additionally, 3 years experience as a Senior Police Supervisor with the agency and attainment of the NC Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate. Senior Police Supervisor III - A minimum of a bachelor's degree or greater and 6 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience or an associate's degree and 8 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. At least 3 years of the experience requirement must have been in a supervisory role equivalent to a Police Sergeant or greater. Certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible for out-of-state lateral hires. Additionally, 6 years experience as a Senior Police Supervisor with the agency and attendance of at least one recognized outside police supervisory or executive training program designated by the agency head.
