OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST

Primary Function

The Occupational Therapist evaluates student performance in the context of access to the educational program and the impact on learning, develops goals and objectives for consideration by Individualized Education Program (IEP) team, develops individual occupational therapy intervention plans, and maintains appropriate documentation, collects data, and prepares formal reports.

Occupational Therapist Supervisor or designee

Duties and Responsibilities

Evaluate student's functional performance in activities that are meaningful, curriculum oriented, and applicable to daily life routines.

Identify student's abilities and educational, developmental, or functional needs with the Student Success Team (SST). Section 504 Team, or Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team.

Develop an intervention plan that supports the student's goals, objectives/outcomes and implements this plan in the least restrictive environment.

Coordinate the implementation of goals/outcomes with the student's team.

Document findings, actions taken, and/or recommendations made regarding areas of service and maintain records as required by California and Federal law and identified by program needs.

Assist in the development of student transition plans, programs and goals.

Collect and maintain data supporting therapy intervention plans towards goals and objectives.

Develop and implement training opportunities and in-services for educational staff, parents, and administrators.

May supervise and evaluate the work of others.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:Typical development of children.Occupational Therapy techniques commonly used in the educational system.Best practices by school based therapists.Ability to:

Plan, organize and conduct an occupational therapy program for physically, cognitively and/or emotionally involved children with consideration of Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, No Child Left Behind Act, the Occupational Therapist Practice Act and Section 504.Consultation regarding questions, inquiries and concerns from parents, students, teachers, and representatives from other school districts.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.Read and understand referrals from education staff, as well as other printed and written material.Work independently.Perform integrated therapy with other Designated Instruction Service (DIS) team members.Physical capacity sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position.

Education, Training, and Experience

Certified with the National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT), graduation from an accredited school by the Council for Occupational Therapy Education, and licensed by the California Board of Occupational Therapy (as of January 2002). One year experience working as an Occupational Therapist in a pediatric setting.

Licenses

Valid California Driver's license.
