Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Performs a variety of interpreting and other associated services to assist the non-English speaking patients receiving care from within the Wake Forest Baptist Health system.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma required with Associate's or Bachelor's degree in foreign language preferred. Working knowledge of medical terminology and basic human anatomy/physiology preferred. Work experience in providing interpreter services preferably in a hospital environment preferred.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:

Successful completion of competency testing, both written and spoken, in a secondary language.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Interprets communications for foreign patients and Medical Center personnel.

2. Aware of foreign patient's culture to provide accurate and thorough interpreter services.

3. Promotes a caring image of the Medical Center by smiling and responding calmly and courteously to patients and staff.

4. Assists in outreach efforts in the cultural areas of the community.

5. Develops relationships with Medical Center personnel who regularly interface with foreign patients.

6. Maintains a log of patient/staff interpreting contacts.

7. Provides departmental support when available.

8. Provides age/developmental appropriate care in accordance with Age/Developmental Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served when interacting with patients' families.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals in both languages Understands a variety of regional accents and linguistic styles and registers Selects appropriate mode of interpretation for each situation Interprets with highest degree of accuracy and completeness in consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes Self-corrects, understands own linguistic limitations, seeks clarification, and accepts correction Notices cues from encounter participants regarding level of understanding and/or need for clarification Strong writing skills and understanding of translation process Considerable proficiency of secondary language and English in both written and oral form Exceptional interpersonal, problem solving and organizational skills Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Fast-paced clinical and office environment, with frequently changing priorities Physically demanding with a lot of walking and standing time Emotionally challenging, as some interactions may be highly stressful requiring maturity, composure, and sound judgment
