The House Supervisor, under the guidance of the Vice President of Patient Care/CNE and in collaboration with the Clinical Directors, is responsible for the supervision, direction, and coordination of nursing practice and all hospital activities to maintain continuity of effective communication, public relations, management; and patient services. In the absences of the President and Vice President, the House Supervisor shall represent Hospital Administration and shall be designated as the officer in charge utilizing the administrative person on call when necessary.

ResponsibilitiesLeadership

Provides leadership by directing, coordinating and delegating patient care in an organized manner, allowing for flexibility. Acts as manager when manager is absent.

Demonstrates the ability to meet the department work schedule.

Accountable for staffing needs. Assists in rooms/patient care to compliment staffing needs.

Assists with completing schedules, address and review payroll as needed.

Helps with staff education/inservices/specialized skilled training programs.

Assists in the hiring and orientation program of newly hired staff.

Collaborating with the manager, effectively resolves complex unit situations, such as patient complaints and crises. Rounds with team members monthly and does department rounds during each shift to support and address potential issues or concerns.

Creates an environment that promotes staff empowerment. Displays creativity and innovation when making recommendations for improvement in the delivery of services to the hospital.

Is able to instruct and lead the staff so that a high level of productivity is maintained, intervening when necessary, to problem solve.

Evaluates and guides staff with appropriate input of job performance. Demonstrates the ability to fairly and consistently interpret, apply and follow personnel policies/procedures.

Provides immediate feedback (positive and negative) about job performance to supervised personnel.

Completes performance evaluations of personnel.

Ensures staffing matrix and guidelines are followed for appropriate staffing to remain within budget.

Assumes the management functions and responsibility for all activities in the hospital in the absence of administration. Performance management for all team members working the shift. Clinical Directors/ Head Nurses are informed.

Coordination of Care

Manages daily operations of patient care. Contributes to the maintenance of high quality, cost effective services consistent with the needs of the users and the hospital's budgetary guidelines, identify and explain key variances. Acts as an interdepartmental liaison promoting effective multidisciplinary team work. Identify and Implement cost saving ideas.

Collaborates with physicians and other health care team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Responsible to maintain current professional expertise.

Promotes personal and professional growth among coworkers.

Exhibits discretion and sound judgment in all aspects of the job.

Researches and recommends short and long term strategies to meet the patient care needs.

Assists with the achievement of objectives and necessary modifications for attainment of goals.

Patient Care

Ensures staffing matrix and guidelines are followed for appropriate staffing to remain within budget.

Initiate activities of the Incident Command in the event of a disaster.

Oversees bed management to ensure appropriate placement for patient care.

Unit nursing rounds are made at least once a shift. Communication is provided regarding the activities of the units, patient condition, unusual events to the Supervisor.

Provides assistance to the nursing units to meet patient needs. Assigning patient admissions based on diagnosis and unit workload.

Confers with county coroner, law enforcement, ambulance services, other hospitals, etc., as needed.

Assists with patient admission and transfer activities, discharges, deaths, and autopsies.

Responds and assists with all emergency codes.

Ensures protocol is followed for release of information.

Keeps appropriate leadership informed of current departmental activities and problems through both oral and written communication.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.

Current license in the state of Iowa Satisfactory performance for 3 years in recent clinical experience required.

A Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Nursing/Nursing Administration or its equivalent preferred.

Demonstrated leadership, good interpersonal relationships, and concern in assessing needs of patients, families and personnel.

Ability to apply sound principles of supervision to achieve hospital and nursing administration goals.

Ability to read, write, and speak English.
