POSITION PURPOSE:
Identifies and treats health disorders among students, as well as provides instruction in the maintenance of
good health and disease prevention. Evaluates the physical conditions of students and refers students to the appropriate resources, as needed. Uses discretionary judgment and analysis when making decisions. Enhances the education process by modifying or removing health related barriers to learning and by promoting an optimal level of wellness for students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatments;Considerable knowledge of child growth and development;Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Google Apps;Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services;Ability to comply with Wake County Public School Systems' (WCPSS) confidentiality policies and procedures;Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;Ability to work independently in a fast paced environment;Ability to use advanced assessment skills in autonomous situations to make nursing judgments regarding complex student needs;Ability to pay attention to detail and have a high level of accuracy;Ability to provide direct treatment according to the individual student's health care plan, as needed;Ability to perform medical responsibilities for individual students based on health care plan;Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with school system staff, students, parents, external agencies, and the community.EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university;Two years of experience in school health, pediatrics, public health or related nursing field.CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
State of North Carolina Registered Nursing license;National Board Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN) and certification by the American Nurses Association (ANA) or the Association of School Nurses (NASA);Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification;Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license according to the State of North Carolinarequirements.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience in school health.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Provides consultation and training for school staff that performs or assists students with medical procedures ordered by a physician.Provides training and/or written information to staff concerning student's written health plans.Performs reviews of student immunization records for schools, as needed.Provides support to students, staff, and parents with regards to medical plans of care.Assists school staff with understanding of immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data.Screens health appraisals for students.Attends workshops and other educational programs to increase nursing knowledge and skills.Provides follow-up evaluations on students, as required; recommends corrective action where problems are identified.Performs physical and developmental assessment of children.Serves as the coordinator for health planning in conjunction with students, families, school staff, and physicians.Provides consultation and training for school staff who perform or assist students with medical procedures ordered by a physician.Based on referral, requests appropriate physician's orders, and develop Individual Health Plans and/or Emergency Medical Plans for students with chronic diseases who require special measures or activity restrictions at school.Provides training and/or written information to staff concerning student's written health plan.Trains designated school staff in administering medications and first aid per approved guidelines.Utilizes advanced assessment skills in autonomous situations to make nursing judgments regarding complex student needs.Performs other related duties, as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, students, parents, staff members of external agencies, and the community. Work is considered light physical work, requiring the exertion of up to 30 pounds of force. The work frequently requires driving automotive equipment.
