Position Description

Position Summary

The training captain is an on-demand position, from 8 to 20 hours per week instructing members and staff on safe vessel operation reporting to the lead training captain. Freedom Boat Club (FBC) is the nation's largest and oldest boat club with locations across the globe. We provide hassle-free boating experience for our membership, offering an alternative to boat ownership.

Candidates must have a valid United States Coast Guard (USCG) captain's license, submit to pre-employment background and drug screenings.

Training captains are responsible for adhering to strict corporate and FBC Wilmington guidelines to train and certify members to operate FBC boats safely anywhere in the country.

FBC Wilmington currently supports two locations, Carolina Beach and Topsail Island (Surf City) and is accepting applications for both locations.

Position Responsibilities:

Training captains must maintain United States Coast Guard captain's license while employed with FBC Wilmington.

Training captains must read and demonstrate proficient understanding of training policies and procedures in accordance with FBC franchise standards. Experts in boat handling, FBC Training captains deliver weekly classroom and on the water training as scheduled and upon request for members and staff, conducting and demonstrating proper vessel inspection prior to use.

Reporting to the lead captain, training captains document all lessons and training classes, certifying training or recommending additional training for new members, certifying offshore training for existing members, and training FBC Wilmington staff in boat handling and seamanship.

Required SkillsCurrent and valid USCG MMC license, 6-pack or higher required3+ years boating experience, preferably with experience captaining in Atlantic OceanPrevious instructor or teaching skills preferredBasic computer, smart phone, and/or tablet skills required and drive to adapt to new technologiesAbility to communicate and instruct clearly and in a manner in which the students understand the course materialExcellent customer service skills are requiredAbility to work independently, and complete tasks in a timely manner with little supervisionMust be a team player, have a positive attitude, and a strong work ethicAbility to work outdoors in the heat for long hoursPosition includes working weekends and holidays as needed.
