Plastic is toxic at every stage of its existence, exacerbating rampant environmental justice concerns on the frontlines of production, consumption, and use. 99% of plastic is made from fossil fuels, only increasing the devastating effects of climate change, and sustains our reliance on polluting fossil fuels. We must drastically reduce plastic production and pollution.Plastic Pollution Coalition is hiring a Campaign Coordinator to join the team full time and support strong policy and communication efforts to stop plastic pollution at its source and build critical public awareness on the dangerous impacts of plastic. The
Campaign Coordinator
will coordinate, organize, and liaise with experts and stakeholders on various PPC-led campaigns and initiatives.The initial focus for this role will be on the Filtered Not Bottled
campaign and federal plastic policy such as the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act. The goal of the Filtered Not Bottled campaign is to help influence U.S. federal and state policies to ensure communities undergoing lead pipe replacement are rapidly and equitably provided with effective water filters rather than single-use plastic water bottles. The goal of involvement in the federal plastic policy is to shape effective legislation that works to end environmental injustices and plastic pollution, starting at the source by designing a swift end to plastic and petrochemical production and rapid implementation of real plastic-free reuse, refill, repair, share, and regenerate solutions.Location:
Remote; Washington, DC area preferred.Reports To:
Project ManagerESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating campaigns and initiatives. This will include, but not be limited to:Filtered Not Bottled:Engage in and help conduct strategic reviews and campaign planning, keeping campaign strategy and deck up to dateCoordinate outreach and collaboration with targeted decision makers, weighing in on EPA and administrative guidelines for LSLRRe-engage and organize relevant stakeholders in the advocacy communityEngage in in-person meetings in Washington, DC and other locations as appropriateEngage targeted stakeholders and elected representatives in the Biden-Harris Administration’s “Get the Lead Out” PartnershipSupport attendance at key conferences and eventsEngage in the development of plans for regional campaign coordinationIdentify and conduct outreach to key decision makers and influencers in Tri-state and DC area at the state and municipal levelOrganize relevant advocacy and community groups to engage in the campaign letters, petition, and other advocacy materialsEngage targeted stakeholders in the EPA LSRL Accelerators program in priority states in the Tri-state and DC areaSupport the implementation of a subgrant program and identification of applicable groupsExplore opportunities to support state and local level policy and initiatives regarding water filtration and the reduction of single-use plastic bottled waterEngage in advocacy for federal plastic policy, such as the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act and other relevant policyExplore implementation of the federal communications strategyCommunications:Create and contribute to communication materials to amplify current campaign related media and announcementsDistribute and support utilization of the Filtered Not Bottled advocacy packet in lead-impacted communities to build public awareness and engagementSupport the iteration of the Filtered Not Bottled advocacy packetDevelop additional communication and education resources on water filtration and federal plastic policy such as policy briefs, one-pagers, public comments, and explanatory blogsOther duties as assigned.BACKGROUND, QUALIFICATIONS & SUCCESS FACTORSKnowledge:BA/BS or Masters degree preferred, or equivalent experienceFoundational knowledge of plastic pollution and its toxic impactsUnderstanding of the collaboration between advocacy and communications necessary to advance environmental campaigns in the digital and in-person realmsExcellent written and oral communications skillsSkills:Proven ability to work independently without close oversight to not only complete assignments, but also identify campaign opportunities and suggest campaign strategiesExperience with environmental advocacy campaigns that can influence policy and/or mobilize individuals and communities to take actionDemonstrated experience in policy and scientific communications and content creationAbility to engage in a positive, collaborative manner with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside Plastic Pollution CoalitionOrganized and detail-oriented, with a professional demeanor and ability to prioritize competing time demands to ensure the ability to meet commitments and deadlines.Familiarity with creative tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, WordPress)Experience using Google Apps (Gmail, Drive, Calendar) and Google docsAbility to adapt to and use new technology and softwareExperience:2 years of experience on environmental campaigns and communication, preference for experience on plastic pollution related initiativesProven ability in communication of scientific and political materials to the general publicProven track record of delivering high quality content and achieving project goalsOther:Ability to attend in-person meetings and events in the U.S. and work across time zones when applicableStrong commitment to Plastic Pollution Coalition’s mission, and commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and justiceA high degree of ethics and standards of personal conductSALARY & BENEFITSThe salary range for this position is $60K to $70K, commensurate with qualifications and experience. PPC also offers a comprehensive benefits program, including employer-sponsored health insurance and paid time off including vacation, holidays, personal days, parental and sick leave, as well as a monthly remote working allowance.
