Together, we keep getting better - advancing our mission to transform healthcare and serve as a leader of positive change.The SPD Surgical Technician performs all tasks associated with the processing of surgical instruments and medical devices including cleaning, decontamination, assembly, sterilization/high level disinfection; monitoring of environmental conditions, sterilization processes, and HLD processes; assembly and dispatching of case carts and emergency carts; inventory and ordering of SPD supplies; and appropriately assists the OR team during crisis and emergent situations.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a SPD Surgical Technician at Hackensack Meridian

Health

includes:1. Assembly and distribution of case carts and emergency carts.: Responsible for performing case cart functions on OR scheduling system (pick list retrieval, tray priorities, etc.). Assembles case carts and emergency carts in a reasonable time-frame with definite accuracy. Dispatches STAT trays and cases.2. Checks for packaging integrity and expiration dates on all sterile items.: Inspects the packing integrity and the expiration date (if applicable) of all sterile items. Takes the appropriate action if discovered.3. Communication.: Uses proper phone etiquette with callers. Communicates pertinent information including actual or potential issues to the Coordinator and/or Supervisor. Makes walking rounds during shift report.4. High level disinfection of instruments and medical devices.: Performs testing of OPA, high level disinfection of Class II medical devices and operates HLD equipment in compliance with manufacturers instructions, policies and procedures, and Infection Prevention.5. Instrument identification, inspection, care and handling, and assembly of procedural and surgical trays and sets.: Performs tasks involving instrument identification, inspection, and assembly of all surgical instruments and medical devices. Performs instrument testing for function and cleanliness.6. Performs and records all quality control monitoring processes.: Performs all biological testing accurately and according to manufacturers instructions. Verifies sterilization parameters on mechanical monitors. Verifies that chemical monitors have reached acceptable range.7. Regulatory Compliance: Clinical practice accurately reflects professional Code of Ethics, the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services regulations, TJC, and institutional policies and procedures. Promotes professional ethics and standards.8. Records tracking information of all processed instruments and medical devices.: Accurately documents locations of instruments and medical devices throughout the processing cycle using the instrument tracking system. Demonstrates ability to use all technician-related functions of the application.9. Responsible for cleaning and decontamination functions.: Performs all tasks associated with the cleaning and disinfection of instrumentation and medical devices and operates all equipment associated with the processes in compliance with manufacturers instructions, policies and procedures and Infection Prevention.10. Responsible for SPD supplies.: Restocks the supply areas in SPD. Maintains appropriate supply levels.11. Responsible for the daily operations of the business unit in the Coordinator's and/or Supervisor's absence. (Technicians with charge responsibilities.): Demonstrates the ability to take charge of the processing functions by appropriately facilitating the team members in the performance of their assignments in the best interest of the business unit and ultimately patient care.12. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.13. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.14. Lifts a minimum of 5 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 5 lbs. and stands a minimum of 1 hour a day.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:1. High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.Licenses and Certifications Required:1. Sterile Processing Certification2. Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution
