POSITION SUMMARY
An Expanded Function Dental Assistant performs a variety of patient care, office and laboratory duties. These tasks require both interpersonal and technical skills. This position assists the dentist or dental hygienist during examinations and treatment of patients.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES & FUNCTIONS
Prepare patient, sterilize and disinfect instruments, set up instrument trays, prepare materials and assist dentist and dental hygienist during dental proceduresTake and record medical and dental histories and vital signs of patientExpose dental diagnostic x-rays, Mount and Label RadiographsMake preliminary impressions for study casts and occlusal registrations for mounting study casts. Pour, trim and polish study casts, fabricate custom impression trays from preliminary impressions, clean and polish removable appliances and fabricate temporary restorationsAssist dentist in management of medical and dental emergenciesInstruct patients in oral hygiene and plaque control programsProvide Pre and postoperative instructions prescribed by dentistPlace and Carve RestorationsSelect and Manipulate gypsums and waxesPerform Coronal polishingDental ChartingRecord treatment information in patient recordsSchedule appointments, prepare bills and receive payment for dental servicesComplete insurance forms and maintain clerical records manually or using a computerApply protective coating of fluoride to teethMaintain Emergency KitPerform routine maintenance of dental equipmentParticipate in community outreach programsPerform other duties as assignedRequirements
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalentRadiologic certification by the PA State Board of Dentistry or National Radiology Certification by Dental Assisting National Board (DANB)Minimum 3 years EFDA experience, public health a plusEFDA State Certification requiredCoronal Polishing Course Certification as required by State Board of DentistryDANB CDA National Certification preferredExperience with dental health maintenance, use of dental technology, infection control, health promotion, performing diagnostic procedures, etc.CPR Basic Life Support Certification
