The Network Engineer-Senior provides enterprise technical engineering and support, as well as network and project based activities. With minimum level of oversight works in collaboration with the Telecommunications team and stakeholders, and is responsible for the design, implementation, and administration of the enterprise server environment adhering to compliance and security requirements.
The Senior Engineer performs complex network design and planning and integration support functions, such as troubleshooting, analysis, research, debugging and problem solving. Coordinates the technical activities of a telecommunication systems administration support team, including upgrading and disaster recovery plans.
The Network Engineer-Senior will exhibit the talent and skills to make competent recommendations and decisions, to manage complex technical projects with minimum manager oversight. It is normal for an individual to be in this job classification for a large part of their career. Expertise in a particular area of design and development is a required. Senior Engineers mentor less experienced engineers. VELCO has a four-level career ladder. This third level is for accomplished engineers typically with a minimum of 7 years engineering experience.

• Applies in-depth and diversified knowledge of carrier class telecommunication engineering practices and standards in system designs and operation.
• Maintains a thorough understanding of telecommunication transport technologies.
• Operates and maintains high capacity optical transport systems, microwave systems, and land mobile radio networks (if applicable).
• Designs, manages, and operates complex private packet switched communication networks (CES, IP routing, DNS, Security, VPN, etc.).
• Manages and operates TDM digital cross connect systems in a multivendor environment.
• Has thorough understanding of analog and digital voice communications and standards.
• Manages a Network Operating Center monitoring TDM, Carrier Ethernet, and proprietary networks using SNMP monitoring tools.
• Monitors and conducts trend analysis for telecommunication networks to proactively identify performance issues ensuring highest availability of critical networks.
• Supports infrastructure that is relied upon on a 7x24 basis.
• Provides engineering and technical support to field personnel at radio sites, distribution utilities and substations throughout the State of Vermont; travel required.
• Conducts field assessments as necessary to plan and manage substation and mountain top radio site projects.
• Completes assigned projects within required timeframe.
• Understands mountain top wireless and substation communications practices including grounding, isolation, and protection.
• Creates a multisite RF propagation plan and analysis.
• Maintains a thorough understanding of FCC licensing and requirements.
• Collaborates with and support all members of the Telecommunications Group.
• Provides a high level of customer service to internal and external customers
• Directs work of junior staff members, provides mentoring and guidance.
• Other duties as required.
Who you are
A Bachelor's degree in information technology or networking is highly desirable; an equivalent combination of education and experience, such as an Associate's Degree in Telecommunications or IT with 7+ years of experience may be considered. CCNA or CCNP certifications are a plus. A Master's Degree or a specialized industry credential together with a history of sustain exceptional performance can reduce the time in this career level.
Experience
The Senior Network Engineer will typically have greater than 7-10 years' related experience (additional experience if without a degree.)
Knowledge/Skills
Able to clearly present complex technical information to committees, management, external regulators and industry associations. Extensive experience with network security, firewalling, related protocol analysis and SNMP is desirable. High proficiency at planning, designing, implementing and managing carrier class statistical (IP) and TDM networking with consideration of traffic loading and bandwidth allocation is essential. This role requires excellent written and verbal communication skills and a self-motivated individual willing to work in a fast-paced, innovative and rewarding environment
Important considerations
The salary range for this position is $101,000 to $142,000 but most offers will fall between $101,000-$122,000
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to maintain fast pace while completing complex, analytical work, in potentially stressful situations, with competing priorities, within tight timelines and with frequent interruptions. Rotating, on-call coverage is required. Must be able to work additional hours when necessary. Periodic travel and overnight stays will be required when attending industry workshops, trainings, etc.
