**Position Information:**

The Paramedic in the Emergency Department (ED) functions as a member of the ED team and is responsible for providing quality patient care to all Emergency Department patients across the lifespan (infants, toddlers, preschool, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics). The ED Paramedic must demonstrate the ability to understand communicate and react effectively and appropriately to the unique needs of neonatal pediatric adolescent adult and geriatric patients. The Paramedic will work in collaboration with the Registered Nurse, ED Provider, LPN, and ED Tech. The Paramedic will work under the direct supervision of the Emergency Services Physician and general direction of the Emergency Services Director. The Paramedic performs all selected procedures and tasks (per hospital policy and protocols) outlined and approved for paramedics by the North Carolina Office of EMS and the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Specific tasks can be delegated by the RN or MD.

**Responsibilities:**

- Takes directions from nurse, physician and/or advanced practice provider to implement prescribed therapies within scope of practice. - Paramedics are restricted to perform under protocols & policies established by UNC Health Lenoir. - Identifies clinical priorities and initiates action to improve patient outcomes based on acuity of the patient. - Maintains a safe, therapeutic, and healing environment through ensuring patient privacy and responsive, respectful, accepting, and professional behavior. - Acts as a patient advocate. - The Paramedic will support and promote Carolina Care - Communicates effectively to promote sharing of information. - Transports patients via wheelchair or stretcher as needed throughout facility. - Initiate IV per order, administer fluids and medication. - Performs basic data collection, prepares patient for exam, and communicates findings to primary and/or charge nurse. - Documentation of medication administration, ongoing assessments, interventions, patient rounding in the EMR in accordance with hospital policies and requirements. - Performs other duties as assigned by management.

**Education Requirements:**

Completion of OEMS approved training & competency program for Paramedic.

**Experience Requirements:**

1 Year experience in a pre-hospital environment as a Paramedic required.

**Licensure/Certification Requirements:**

Current certification as Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (EMT-P) with the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medicine.

+ Basic Life Support (BLS) Advanced

+ Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

+ Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

+ Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) within 6 months of hire date.

**Continuing Education:**

- Meets continuing educational requirements necessary to maintain EMT-Paramedic certification. - Meets all mandatory educational requirements defined by hospital. Participates in scheduled staff development sessions. Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements: Incumbent must demonstrate the ability to understand, communicate and react effectively and appropriately to the unique needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Incumbent must complete orientation and demonstrate clinical competences per the positions competency checklist before being allowed to perform independently. Hours of Work: 12-hour shifts (Day or Mid-shift) Weekend Requirements: Every Other

**WORK ENVIRONMENT:**

Exposure to bloodborne pathogens requiring the use of protective equipment; exposure to other infectious diseases. Exposure to environmental extremes.

**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:**

Ability to push stretcher and other patient carrying devices with patient.
