We are excited to announce a unique opportunity for an experienced and visionary medical professional to join UT Health San Antonio as the Inaugural Medical Director of our new Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program. This program will be an integral part of our Multispecialty & Research Hospital and NCI-designated cancer center, providing comprehensive care and innovative treatment options to patients with hematological and oncologic disorders. In this pivotal role, you will work closely with the hospital and cancer center leadership to develop, establish, and lead the unit, ensuring the highest standards of patient care, innovation, research, and collaboration. The Medical Director will have a dyad working relationship with the SCTCT program Senior Nursing Director. The new Director’s expertise and strategic leadership will play a critical role in shaping the future of bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapy program within our institution.Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Unit Development and Leadership:

Lead the strategic planning and development of the Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program, establishing protocols, guidelines, and standards for patient care.Collaborate with hospital and cancer center leadership to design and implement state-of-the-art infrastructure, technology, and facilities to support transplant and cellular procedures.Recruit, hire, and lead a team of exceptional medical professionals, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, research, and continuous improvement.

Clinical Expertise:

Provide expert medical consultation and oversight for bone marrow transplantation patients and those eligible for cellular therapy, ensuring the highest quality of care throughout the transplant therapy process.Develop and implement treatment plans, collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams to address complex patient cases and ensure optimal outcomes.Lead and participate in cutting-edge clinical research projects related to bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapy, contributing to advancements in transplant techniques, and novel cellular therapies in patient outcomes, and quality of life.Establish collaborations with internal and external researchers to drive innovative research initiatives and clinical trials within the unit.

Educational Excellence:

Mentor and educate medical staff, residents, fellows, and junior faculty on the latest advancements and best practices in bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapy.Develop and deliver educational programs, workshops, pilot projects, and seminars to promote continuous learning and professional growth among unit staff.Advocate for the needs and well-being of bone marrow transplant and cellular therapy patients and their families, ensuring a compassionate and patient-centered approach to care.Collaborate with support services to provide comprehensive psychosocial and emotional support for patients throughout their transplant journey.

Collaboration with Hospital and Cancer Center Leadership:

Work closely with the cancer center leadership to align the Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy Unit's goals and strategies with the overall mission of the hospital and cancer center.Collaborate on cross-functional initiatives, sharing expertise and contributing to the advancement of cancer care across the center.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Collaborate with hospital and cancer center leadership to develop and manage the unit's budget, resource allocation, and financial sustainability.Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, accreditation requirements, and hospital policies.

Candidate Qualifications

Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.Board certification in Hematology and/or Medical Oncology with significant expertise in bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapy.Proven track record of clinical excellence and leadership in bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapy, including transplant-related research and publications.Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.Experience in building and leading multidisciplinary teams.Demonstrated ability to develop and implement clinical protocols and guidelines.Commitment to patient-centered care, continuous learning, and innovative research.About Mays Cancer Center

The Mays Cancer Center is one of only four NCI-designated cancer centers in Texas and the only one in South Texas. The multidisciplinary faculty includes more than 120 members of UT Health San Antonio representing more than 10 academic departments and 3 schools. The Center saw nearly 4,200 new cancer patients in the last 12 months, had over 40,000 patient encounters, and generated nearly 80,000 RVUs overall. The Center holds $19 M in annual total cost NCI funding, and over $32 M in annual total cost NIH funding. In addition, the Center has added 22 NIH-funded laboratory investigators in the last five years, recruited jointly with the Departments of Biochemistry and Structural Biology, Pharmacology, Molecular Medicine, Cell Systems and Anatomy, and Medicine.In March 2021, UT Health San Antonio broke ground on a new $430 million hospital at the South Texas Medical Center that will focus on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer and other complex diseases. The eight-story, 144-bed hospital will offer specialty care in cancer, orthopedics, urology, and thoracic and bariatric surgery. The facility is set to become a host site for early-phase clinical trials, including all state-of-the-art cell therapies for cancer, from allogeneic stem cell transplantation to CAR-T cells. The hospital is expected to open in December of 2024. The hospital is being built on land donated by the San Antonio Medical Foundation and will be connected to the Mays Cancer Center via a pedestrian sky bridge.Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest and current CV to Renee Breer at
