GENERAL STATEMENT

This is not a coding or software development position. This is a design position where the incumbent will formulate concepts and oversee design and production of web page layout, styling, UX/UI, and other artistic renderings and content for webpages. This includes designing on Figma, Adobe XD or other design software. While primarily a design position, a strong understanding of Content Management Systems like WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, or other CMS is required. Basic understanding of CSS, HTML, JavaScript, and responsive web design principles are required. Understanding JavaScript libraries like React or Vue and CSS libraries like Bootstrap and Tailwind is not required for this position but is a plus.

The Web Designer, learn, and explore their creativity. This position will empower the incumbent to use their education in programming and design to its fullest potential. The Web Designer will create and maintain as many as 10 web sites for various departments within ASI.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Strong understanding of web-based design using tools like Figma, Adobe XD, or other layout/design programs.Strong understanding of layouts, color theory, and best practices in graphic design for the web.Coordinates assignments and communicates with the ASI Web and Application Developer, Communications department, and staff.Designs stunning, fun and exciting web sites for various organizations within ASI.Gives assistance or technical directions where possible to fellow staff and the staff of other divisions on aspects of their websites.Meet with customers and discuss technical points, outline customers’ expectations, prioritize concerns, and set deadlines or timetables.Intermediate knowledge of Content Management Systems (CMS) like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Etc.Maintains an active job/change log.Creates page templates to enhance continuity, readability, compatibility, accessibility, and navigation across all ASI web pages.Work in collaboration with all other ASI Communication departments.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

A minimum of one-year experience using Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, or other design tool.A minimum of one-year experience building web pages in a CMS like WordPress, Drupal, or Joomla.Enrolled in Graphic Design, Art, Computer Science, or related major.Must be concurrently enrolled at CSULB in six or more undergraduate units (three or more graduate units) with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Continuing education in a computer science or related field is highly recommended, but not required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Ability design for the web which includes web coding conventions and responsive design principles.Ability to design for both desktop and mobile websites and web applications.UX/UI ExperienceContemporary Color and Design theories.Excellent working knowledge of the various limitations and capabilities of web browsers and various plug-ins.Familiarity with web accessibility standards and ADA 508 compliance in web development.Familiarity with web optimizations and design conventions.Familiarity with web site analyzers that test for errors and performance bottlenecks.Able to work with Windows and/or Mac computers.Must be highly organized and have good planning skills.Sense of user-centered design.Must work well with others, be self-motivated, willing to learn new technologies, can meet project deadlines and be punctual and accountable.
