the application process for external applicants .JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:The Electro-Optics Center (EOC), located in Freeport PA, a Division in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University, is seeking engineers with expertise in Photonics, supporting military and intelligence community customers.ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.Responsibilities include:Perform research and development tasks in fiber optics and photonicsCommunicate and document results in reports and presentationsAssist with development of proposals for projectsLead project effortsHigher-level responsibilities include:Assist in new concept developments; analyzing alternatives independently and applying engineering techniques and procedures to assignmentsManage projects of small or moderate size and scope, making substantial contributionsThis position will be filled at the intermediate or advanced professional level, depending upon the successful candidate’s education and experience. This typically requires a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline and two years related experience for the intermediate professional level. Additional experience, education, and/or competencies are required for higher-level positions.Required skills and experience includes:Two or more years experience in fiber optics and photonicsDevelopment of network architectures, communication protocols, sensors, photonic systems, devices, lighting and power delivery, integration- as used in military platforms.Characterizing photonics components and assembliesPrototyping and demonstration of optics / fiber optics / photonic systemsManufacturing and manufacturing problem solvingInterfacing with and collecting data from real photonic hardwareAbility to clearly communicate, document, and present resultsPreferred skills and experience includes:A Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related field is highly desiredProject managementFamiliarity with photonic integrationAware of current progress in the photonics fieldBusiness development experience with government customersTransition / implementation of new technology into manufacturingAn active Secret security clearance with eligibility for TS/SCI is highly desirableYou must submit a cover letter of interest and a resume to be considered for this position.Some travel will be required.You must be a U.S. citizen to apply.Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
