Position PurposeOperates school bus and related equipment to provide safe and orderly transportation of students and other authorized persons on assigned routes and other designated locations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSVehicle OperationDrives bus daily following assigned route and adhering to established schedules.Drives bus to and from extracurricular activities.Anticipates problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and makes necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays.Performs pre- and post-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure bus can be operated safely and notifies supervisor of needed repairs.Keeps assigned bus clean and maintains appropriate level of fuel.Reports all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems and completes required corresponding reports.Student Management
Instructs students on safe entry, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations. Supervises students while they board and leave the bus, and cross the street.Maintains discipline in a courteous manner and uses effective behavior management control over groups of students. Reports student discipline problems to appropriate administrator and communicates with teachers and parents regarding student's behavior when warranted.Other
Operates and monitors two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office and other drivers.Ensures that a communication device is in proper working order before each trip.Completes and maintains accurate, up-to-date, and timely records and reports, including but not limited to those related to bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers.Attends and participates in trainings and other career/professional development opportunities.Safety
Follows procedures to ensure that no child is left alone on bus without adult supervision at any time, and that all children have departed bus at the end of all bus routes (morning, evening and during field trips or other special trips).In case of accidents/emergencies, evacuates children according to written and practiced procedures, ensures that medical emergency procedures are followed; completes a written report as required.Observes all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.Ensures proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, and reflector.Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor. Reports any hazardous conditions along scheduled route.Maintains Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate.

Minimum Required Qualifications
Education:
Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency preferred.Certification/License:
Clear and valid Texas CDL Class B driver's license with (P) passenger and (S) school bus endorsement;Insurable by the District's insurance carrier;Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate;Complete a 20-hour certification course.
Experience:
Experience as bus driver in a school district or experience transporting children preferred; must have an acceptable driving record; see Insurability Requirements below.Language:
Bilingual (English/Spanish) working proficiency preferred in some settings.Special Requirements:
Must be able to pass annual physical;Must be able to complete a recurring 8-hour course to maintain the CDL license.
