Position Summary
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
Overall responsibility for operational activities and leadership for assigned portfolio of departments at both Long Beach Medical Center and Miller Children and Women’s Hospital. Responsibilities include planning, organizing, developing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating the activities, performance and resources (human, material and capital) necessary to deliver quality patient care, efficient operations, regulatory compliance, and financial stewardship. This position performs the job functions in accordance with the mission, vision, values and policies of LBMC & MCWHLB, established by governing bodies. In collaboration with the Senior Leadership team and in support of the Chief Operating Officer.
Under the direction of the COO, the VP Operations has a high degree of independence required to achieve clinical operating and financial results consistent with strategic and operating plans, objectives, and policies.This position develops and maintains operating and capital budgets, implements and executes strategic and tactical plans, as well as dashboards/balanced scorecards to measure performance and outcomes.Effective performance requires working closely with the Senior Leadership Team, Medical Staff leadership, Service Line Leaders and the Clinical and Ancillary leadership; as well as in-depth knowledge of state and federal regulations for the hospitals and clinical practice standards to ensure compliance with all regulatory, professional and agency requirements.This position requires self-awareness and self-motivational skills, ability to function independently without direct supervision while involving and requesting assistance from the COO, Service Line Directors, Direct Reports and others when appropriate.Provides leadership in the development and implementation of the hospital’s strategic priorities, initiatives, goals, tactics and action plans.Monitors progress of activities and adjusts resources to ensure desired outcomes are achieved.Develops department policies and procedures to promote growth, improve organizational performance and increase patient and customer satisfaction.Oversees and manages a variety clinical and support services.Develops strategies to respond effectively and meet the needs of the changing healthcare industry.Drives quality, patient experience and caregiver engagement outcomes.Fosters innovation and program growth in support of strategic objectives.Manages business ventures of the hospital including contracted service agreements.Accountable for ensuring that business development priorities and strategies are integrated into operations, budget and capital planning.Maintains positive relationships with the Medical Staff and monitors the caregiver experience including morale, engagement and recognition where applicable.Develops standards of performance, evaluates performance, and initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions in accountable areas.Coordinates pertinent activities related to the Joint Commission (TJC) and California Department of Public Health (CDPH).Implements quality and safety improvement activities which promote employee/physician involvement in decision making and tie with organizational diversity efforts.Selects, develops, and mentors leaders and department managers.Oversees departments’ budgets and monitors variance against budget; and ensures accountability for improvement plans.Functions as a member of Leadership, Operations Council, and other committees as required.Functions as liaison with outside organizations, where applicable.Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, conferences, and professional affiliations.Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
