Job Title:EMF/RF Power Engineering Specialist IIILocation:Charlotte, NC, Knoxville, TN, Lenox, MA, Palo Alto, CA, Remote/Home BasedJob Summary and Description:The EMF/RF Health Assessment and Safety Program focuses on studying the potential impacts of EMF and RF, associated with the electric power system, on workers and the public. Environmental health and safety issues related to electric and magnetic field (EMF) and radiofrequency (RF) exposure are evolving. These evolving issues include:Rapid evolution and expansion of the electric grid to meet increasing demands for low-carbon electrification and grid resiliencyIncreasing use of flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) and high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) technologies, including application of new transmission approaches, such as hybrid (HVAC/HVDC) linesIncreased installation of smart grid and distributed energy resources, including smart meters, electric vehicle chargers, photovoltaic installations, and new energy storage optionsNew work practices and workforce to support the modern gridThe loss of EMF expertise and knowledge as utility subject matter experts (SMEs) retireThe EMF Power Engineering Specialist will conduct research in complex, high impact technical or scientific fields.Key Responsibilities and Requirements:Works independently and within a team environment on technical activities without direct supervisionAssumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives or problems where the relationships between cause and effect are difficult to establish and little or no precedence exists, and the use of creative and imaginative thinking is requiredMaintains familiarity with the progress and problems in assigned technical areas and support identification of industry gapsActs as technical specialist for executing on projects or project tasks and provides guidance and oversight to other team members as needed.Essential Skills:Relevant educational background (e.g., EE or applied physics)Knowledge of how power transmission and distribution systems are designedKnowledge of corona and field effects is a plusInterest in learningExcellent verbal and written communication skillsDesirable Skills: Understanding of power system designs (e.g. HVAC, HVDC overhead and underground transmission) and how it could affect electric and magnetic fieldsElectric and magnetic field mitigation approaches such as shielding materials and influence of conductor phases/configurationsFundamental understanding and application of electric and magnetic field modeling methods and measurement techniquesExperience with EMF modeling of HVDC, HVAC, and Hybrid overhead lines and submarine cables (HVDC, HVAC)Knowledge of EMF compatibility with implanted medical devices, sensitive imaging equipment, and GPSFamiliarity with radiofrequency (RF) safety concepts and modeling/measurement approachesAdditional Requirements: Works alongside EPRI Member Services and EPRI International to support member/client needsEffectively communicate complex strategies and results, expressing thoughts clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing, to subject matter experts, program members and advisorsAdjusts communication content and format to capture attention and meet the needs of the intended audience through guidelines, reports, meetings, webcasts, workshops and conferencesRegularly communicates and coordinates work activities across programs and sectorsMay provide oversight of a project team to assure technical and financial milestones are metOrganizes the external and interdepartmental activities ensuring completion of the project/product on schedule and within budgetLeads the planning and execution of complex project work within the technical department to meet member/client objectives; prepares and presents research reportsSignificant customer interface component with ability to lead research projectsInfluences project teams in the engineering aspects of the technical workRegularly interfacing and coordinating with national and international technical networks (e.g, manufacturers, consultants, academia and research organizations)Develop and lead proposal efforts and new promotional workDevelops research or services opportunities of value to EPRI members that fit EPRI’s mission and capabilities. This will include solving customer problems, producing insights and information vital to the members, and delivering information in a manner that members and customers can and will applyProvides guidance and mentorship to junior staffEducation:Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required13+ years of professional experienceThe salary range for this position is $153,900 USD to $168,000 USD annually.This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s annual incentive program.
