Counsel - Claims and Litigation

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the claims department in addressing all aspects of the legal claims function including coverage interpretation and advice, and assisting and advising on complex coverage and extra contractual litigation.
- Develop and implement cost effective legal strategies on complex claims and lawsuits and prepare for settlement or trial, as appropriate.
- Prepare and participate in round-table discussions regarding case strategy and development.
- Assist with the preparation of employees designated as fact and corporate witnesses.
- Prepare periodic reports to management regarding counsel performance and recommended panel counsel changes.
- Participate in the negotiation and preparation of claims services agreements, third party administrator agreements and related service agreements to support the claims function at Starr Companies.
Skills/Experience Required:
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of coverage litigation and appellate process nationwide.
- Experience handling all aspects and stages of the litigation process from case inception through settlement or trial, in connection with insurance defense and coverage litigation.
- Experience preparing, defending and deposing fact, corporate and expert witnesses.
- First or second-chair trial experience preferred.
- Transactional and litigation experience in a business environment preferred.
- A general understanding of law firm matter management and E-billing systems a plus.
- Ability to work well under pressure, handle and prioritize numerous matters and work independently.
- Strong negotiation, communication, writing and organizational skills.
- Detail oriented.
- Bachelor’s degree (BA) from four-year college or university and JD degree from an ABA accredited law school.
- Computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
For individuals assigned and/or hired to work in New York or Los Angeles, Starr Insurance Companies is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $150,000-$175,000.
