POSITION SUMMARY:
The Certified Lactation Consultant reports to the Perinatal Education Supervisor. Provides information and education regarding breastfeeding to patients and families. Assists patients with the establishment of lactation,
Identifies and aids in resolution of breastfeeding difficulties, develops care plans with staff to meet patient's individual needs, providing follow-up through phone calls or private consultations. Provides information and education regarding breastfeeding to maternity and NICU staff. Assists in the development of policies and protocols.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
* Certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required.* RN license or Bachelor's Degree preferred.
COMPETENCIES:
* Possesses basic computer skills.

Job-Specific Competency
1. Assists in the establishment of lactation through education and direct patient care in the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods.
2. Assesses for breastfeeding difficulties. Works with providers to establish an individual plan of action for patients, using hospital policies and protocols to ensure consistency of information.
3. Provides emotional support for patients with breastfeeding difficulties. Practices active listening skills to fully assess a patient's needs. Provides reassurance, acceptance and encouragement.
4. Provides information in an unbiased manner and encourages parents to make informed choices based on their own needs and preferences. Demonstrates acceptance of patients' feelings, rights and choices as evidenced by patient feedback.
5. Works collaboratively with maternity and NICU staff to develop breastfeeding policies and protocols for all breastfeeding dyads.
6. Shares educational resources with maternity and NICU staff through in-services and one to one communication.
7. Provides written documentation of care and treatment recommendations.
8. Provides follow-up for at-risk patients after leaving hospital.
9. Plans class material to meet participants' level of understanding. Ensures that requested topics are covered in class. Relates to clients in a supportive, affirmative and open manner. Is sensitive and responsive to cultural differences. Displays approachability as evidenced by participants' comments on class evaluations.
10. Represents ECHN as a breastfeeding resource to the community through public speaking/events
