PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Assist in development and implementation of a comprehensive program of health services for the school. Provide direct health services to students. Promote health education and preventive health practices for students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education programValid registered nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners.Certified by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision, hearing, and scoliosis screeningCPR CertificationValid Texas School Nurse CertificateSpecial Knowledge/Skills:Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects

Minimum Experience:

Two years nursing experience, preferable in community health

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

1. Provide temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students or staff Management according to district policy and procedures.2. Serve as health advocate for students.3. Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).4. Coordinate a management system to administer medications to students at school. Administer medications according to district policy and procedures.5. Perform screening procedures as required by the Texas Department of Health, Texas Education Agency, and district policy. Make appropriate referrals as necessary.6. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the campus health programand implement changes based on the findings.7. Maintain a program on prevention and control of communicable diseases.8. Participate in the implementation of the campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.9. Provide health counseling and instruction on an individual basis.Consultation

10. Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community.11. Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals, working with students, teachers, parents, and the medical and health care community as needed.12. Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis teams, child abuse situations, and school committees.13. Make home visits concerning health problems as necessary with permission of the principal.14. Communicate regularly with principal and health services coordinator regarding health services issues.Administration

15. Review and evaluate immunization records.16. Enforce procedures to ensure proper administration, safety, and security ofmedications, first aid or health supplies, and campus health equipment.17. Supervise and train LVN(s) in clinic procedures and responsibilities accordingto district policy.18. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required,including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.19. Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.20. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, Texas Department ofHealth rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in the area of healthservices.21. Report potential health and safety hazards to principal.Professional

22. Articulate the district's mission and goals in the area of health care servicesto the community and solicits its support in realizing the mission.23. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.24. Maintain certification in CPR, vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening, and as a health screener.25. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
