GENERAL SUMMARY
Staff Accountants will assist with general accounting support functions including the preparation of reconciliations, period closes, projections, reports, assistance with the general ledger and will need to know and apply accounting theory and principles, an d ensure observance of professional standards and state rules including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Governmental Accounting Standards, Higher Education Accounting Standards, State Fiscal Rules, CCCS and College procedures. Staff Accountants will also need to know understand and apply financial aid and other grant rules, regulations, and guidance.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Perform one or more of the following:
Perform all travel related functions for Fiscal Services, including issuing travel authorization numbers for all staff, book lodging reservations as requested, manage the travel card program, reconcile all travel expense reimbursement requests and any mileage reimbursement requests, act as a liaison between Fiscal Services and college departments to provide information in a timely manner, respond to various employee inquiries and provide training when necessary.
Periodically reconcile billings, invoices, and/or accounts related to student activity.
Provide professional level support to the Controller and Assistant Controller in grant and financial aid scholarship activities, including:
Ensuring the general ledger properly reflects financial aid activity, performing reconciliations, processing check requests, and working with the Financial Aid Department to clear outstanding items found in reconciliations
Ensuring the general ledger properly reflects grant activities on an accrual basis, performing reconciliations, preparing reports and meeting regularly with departments and grant managers.
Ensure that grant activities comply with all applicable regulations and guidance, including State legislation, Federal grant regulations, the Compliance Supplement, State Fiscal Procedures and Rules.
Process monthly and bi-weekly payrolls.
Reconcile and record daily bank transactions, and initiate wire transfers.
Account for capital transactions including recording depreciation and performing inventory.
Provide back-up coverage for other departmental functions/tasks.
Perform general accounting support functions, including: processing various general ledger transactions, preparing numerous reconciliations, invoices as needed, monitoring and clearing diagnostic/exception reports, monthly, quarterly, and year-end closes, assist in preparation of schedules and other items for internal and external audit purposes, and year-end financial reporting.
Special projects and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any equivalent combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Education:
A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and two (2) year of technical/professional experience in accounting
OR
An Associate’s degree in Accounting and four (4) years of technical/professional experience in accounting OR
Experience:
Six (6) years of technical/professional experience in accounting.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of Accounting Principles Generally Accepted in the United States of America (GAAP).
Effective computer skills, especially in the use of Excel spreadsheets.
Strong communication, analytical, organizational, and people skills.
Demonstrated ability in problem solving, multitasking and time management.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience:
Accounting or other experience related to grants and/or financial aid and/or payroll.
Capital accounting experience.
Experience with higher education or governmental financial reporting (GASB).
Experience working with Banner and/or CORE.
Experience working with cross-functional teams.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Personal computer, copier, scanner, phone, calculator, printer.
