Position Description

Backhoe Operator

FLSA:

Reporting Functions : Reports to Superintendent of Diocesan Cemeteries

Job Function:

To provide maintenance and prepare burial sites for the Diocesan Cemeteries; Holy Saviour Cemetery and Resurrection Cemetery.

Duties and Responsibilities:Operation of the backhoe in the performance of interment work.Operation of trucks and payloader (front-end loader).Operation of the push mowers and large mowers.Trimming and/or removal of cemetery owned trees and shrubs when authorized.Cutting of grass around all areas of the cemetery as required.Removal of snow at cemeteries, current and retired Bishops' residences, when necessary.Erect tents for burial and prepare the grave for interment. At times manual digging is required for cremated remains.Abel to manually dig for foundations 3 to 4 feet deep.Able to operates the lift for entombments.Able to relocate monuments on a grave and set them, if required.Able to install vaults in graves.Able to push the leaf blower for the collection of leaves.Required to wear protective gear (eye and ear) as a cemetery employee.Cleaning and store all tools and equipment as directed.Performs any work directed by the Superintendent, Working Foreman or Field Supervisor.Perform other duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements:

High School Diploma. (preferred)Equipment experience requiredFormal Vocational/Technical school education is desirable.Other Requirements:

Revocation of PA Driver's license may result in termination of employment.Must be licensed/trained to work a backhoe and other heavy equipment needed for cemetery work.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires heavy physical effort with reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate the different sets of controls while operating the equipment and attachments. The incumbent may be subjected to considerate strain caused by vibration, jerking, and jolting of the equipment over rough surfaces and the need to operate controls in awkward positions. Heavy effort is frequently exercised when performing duties such as tamping, carrying caskets/urns, lifting/moving grave planks, setting headstones, etc. Incumbent must be able to walk on hilly, flat, or rolling terrain. This position requires the employee to lift weights up to 50 lbs. Occasionally items weighing more than 50-lbs. are lifted with assistance from co-workers. Employee may be exposed to noise levels.

Working Conditions:

Perform work indoors and outdoors throughout the year - subject to all weather elements; Full Time position; 5 days per week. The cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. Staff may be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery .
