General Description:

The Electrician performs skilled electrical work including installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical controls, wiring, and lighting systems, and inspecting transformers, circuit breakers, and other electrical components. The Electrician troubleshoots electrical issues using appropriate testing devices. This role is critical to ensuring that general and complex electrical maintenance procedures are successfully completed throughout Richmond Public Schools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems, maintaining required records and filesRepairs hot water heaters and electric boilersInstalls, wires, repairs, tests, and calibrates commercial and residential kitchen equipmentRepairs electrical services and switch panels, and maintains lighting systems, including fluorescent and general lighting fixturesInstalls and repairs fire alarms systemsRepairs and maintains electric motorsRepairs and replaces panel boards, switchgear, and breakersInstalls wiring in a building including piping, switches, receptacles, lights, and tests to ensure proper operation of all electrical systemsInstalls and maintains remote control devices for magnetic motor connects and relaysReplaces ballastsConnects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipmentInstalls control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit breaker panelsTests electrical circuits using ohmmeters and other testing instrumentsUses hand and machine tools to cut, bend, thread, measure, install, and assemble electrical conduitsFollows all required safety precautions in the performance of electrical workPrepares and works from blueprints, sketches, and diagramsShifts working hours/schedule as needed to provide servicesPerforms other related duties as assignedQualifications:

High School diploma or equivalent requiredCurrent electrician's license and a valid Virginia motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record requiredMinimum of four years at journeyman status as an electrician preferredConsiderable knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and practices of electrical work, electrical codes, policies, guidelines, and proceduresKnowledge of the occupational hazards and required safety precautionsAbility to interpret and work from instructions, guidelines, regulations, and policiesAbility to work in a cooperative manner with co-workers, supervisors, managers, and school/department administration and staffExcellent knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in the trade requiredAble to lift and carry 20 lbs. frequently and 50-100 lbs. occasionally for short distances or with the aid of load-bearing equipmentSufficient strength and dexterity are necessary to perform all required tasks of lifting, stooping, bending, and carrying electrical equipment and materials to and from work sitesSkilled in the use of tools, equipment, and machinery required in electrical work sitesPreferred knowledge in using computer or tablet-type equipment
