DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The St. Charles Health System Perianesthesia departments include Presurgical Clinic, Preoperative Holding and Recovery Areas. Perianesthesia departments support surgical, procedural, and trauma care to patients across multiple specialties. These departments provide specialized care to patients during the perianesthesia experience.
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Clinical Nurse Educator Perianesthesia Services supports the clinical practice, continuing education and professional development of the clinical caregivers within this service. The Nurse Educator functions in the role of learning facilitator, practice expert, change agent, mentor and leader in both Perianesthesia and Nursing Professional Development specialties of nursing within St. Charles Health System. The works in collaboration with the leadership teams from both Perianesthesia Services and Clinical Practice and Development to promote excellence in professional practice that is in alignment with departmental and enterprise-wide standards, initiatives, and goals. This position does not directly manage any other caregiver but will review the work of others and may provide input during evaluations. This position works with but may not be limited to Assistant Nurse Managers, Charge Nurses, Specialty Coordinators, CNA's, Transportation Aides, and other Clinical Educators within the system.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
The Clinical Nurse Educator will carry out responsibilities of standard work within the following realms:
LEARNING FACILITATOR:
Conduct systematic and ongoing gap analysis related to areas of deficit in knowledge, skill and/or practice of perioperative clinical staff.
Utilize gaps and needs assessment to identify education priorities.
Plan, develop, implement and evaluate relevant service line specific educational programming.
Facilitate service line orientation.
Integrate with Clinical Practice & Development educational programs for new products, equipment, processes, policies and practice and associated staff competencies.
CHANGE AGENT:
Demonstrate knowledge of change theory and apply principles to support change within service line.
Facilitate the adult learning process.
Create a climate that supports learning.
Ensure that service line educational programs are in alignment with organizational mission, values, and goals.
Coordinate special projects as assigned.
MENTOR:
Identify candidates to function in role of preceptor within the service line.
Mentor and support preceptors/ new hires/ nursing residents/ students.
Perform ongoing competency assessment of new hires/ nursing residents/ students and preceptors.
Support all perioperative services clinical staff through lifelong learning and professional development.
LEADER:
Facilitate organizational competency model with leadership team and staff.
Represent service line as practice expert and education coordinator on various organizational and service line committees.
Serve as a role model for education and professional practice, and promote excellence, quality & safety in practice.
Integrate ethical principles in all areas of practice.
Assist in performance review of identified preceptors.
Make recommendations on development of annual education budget.

EDUCATION
Required: Bachelors of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
Preferred: Master's Degree in Nursing or other health related field. Degree or certification in Nursing education.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION
Required: Current Oregon RN licensure
CPAN or CAPA required, or certification obtained within one year of date of hire.

AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification
Preferred: Specialty certification in Nursing Professional Development (ANPD).
EXPERIENCE
Required: 5 years of progressively responsible acute care nursing experience plus three (3) years of PACU nursing experience.
Preferred: Two (2) years as Nurse Educator or similar position
SKILLS
Required: Knowledge of adult instructional methods and theories, learning concepts and evaluation.
Knowledge of current principles, practices and standards related to nursing practice in specialty area.
Ability to develop and deliver effective educational programs.
Knowledge of medical and professional nursing ethics and patient privacy rights.
Must have excellent communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse population (including internal & external customers, leadership, and community partners) and professionally represent SCHS.
