Job Description

Bus Driver

Responsible to:

Director of Transportation

Qualifications:High School Diploma or equivalentValid driver's license with CDL-BExcellent driving record or any equivalent combination of education and trainingrequired to operate commercial motor vehicle - Demonstrated skill in driving a large

bus

Must pass a pre-employment physical examination with controlled substance testingand random tests for controlled substances and alcohol

Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skillsSufficient strength, agility and dexterity, visual acuity, and ocular-motor reaction timeto operate a school bus at all times, including emergency situations.

Essential Responsibilities:

Safely transports students on an assigned route according to a definite schedule, whichmay require driving during pre-daylight and dusk periods. Operates vehicle in

compliance with all traffic and safety laws and regulations, exhibiting defensive

driving habits and observing posted speed limits

Performs all activities required to safely drive a school bus transportingCoffeeCountySchool students and other authorized personnel to and from schools and school

related events

Provides transportation for field trips, other sanctioned outings, athletic contests, andextra-curricular events which may require driving after dark, as assigned

Monitors riders for potentially dangerous riding situations; watches for and confiscatessharp objects. Reports discipline riders who break posted rules

Monitors orderly entering/exiting of bus. Takes appropriate safety precautions asstudents are boarding and departing

Inspects bus and checks fuel, oil water, lights, brakes and steering; regulates heating andventilating equipment provided on the bus for the comfort of passengers before

driving. Identifies needs and arranges for repairs and maintenance

Immediately reports all accidents to school system and law enforcement officials.Handles emergency situations by stabilizing situation until assistance can be

obtained. May implement emergency evacuations to include assisting students to

evacuate the bus and provide safe transport

Keeps records of the number of passengers transportedCleans bus inside and out, as neededAdheres to all safety and housekeeping standards established by the department andvarious regulatory agencies

Displays ability to interact positively with, gain respect of, and maintain discipline overstudent passengers to ensure that behavior is controlled and not distractive to safe

driving

Displays knowledge of child behavior and safety practices as necessary in thecompletion of daily responsibilities

Maintains knowledge of the local street and road system ofCoffeeCountyEnsures safe, proper, and courteous motor vehicle operating proceduresDemonstrates positive customer service skillsMaintains a positive, safe, and peaceful environment on the school busEnsures state regulations and laws pertaining to the operation of school buses arefollowed

General Requirements:

Follows Federal and State Laws and adopted policies and procedures in accordancewith School Board priorities

Conducts oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the higheststandards of public education and in support of the District's Vision/Mission

Maintains ethical standards, which include professionalism and the protection ofconfidential student and staff information
