To sell mortgages, you need to be licensed as a mortgage loan originator (MLO). This is also sometimes called a "loan officer" or "mortgage broker." Each state has its own license requirements for becoming a mortgage loan originator. All states use the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) to track MLO licensing. To do business as a mortgage loan originator, you need to:
Apply for an NMLS account and ID number.Complete your state-specific mortgage Pre-license Education ("PE").Pass a licensing exam.Apply for your Georgia mortgage license though the NMLS.Complete background checks and pay all fees.Associate your NMLS account with an employer.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required. 4-year degree preferred, but not required.
- Minimum 6 years' experience originating mortgage loans.
- Strong understanding and knowledge of financial institution and products and services.
- Excellent cross-selling, organizational, and communication skills.
- Able to communicate effectively with borrowers, builders, and realtors.
- Ability to deal with time constraints and strong attention to detail.
- Extended hours sitting and performing computer tasks may be required.
